The Book of Boba Fett finale killed off a recently introduced character in Cad Bane, though the surprising outcome was entirely justified. Among the Disney+ series’ myriad of character cameos in episode 6, Cad Bane’s attracted the most attention, as it represented the sinister bounty hunter’s live-action debut. Toward The Book of Boba Fett episode 7’s beginning, Bane and Fett met, but Fett declined a duel with Bane. Later, following a second staredown between the two killers-for-hire, they exchanged gunfire, and Fett eventually killed Bane by driving his gaffi stick into the latter’s chest. Compounded by Boba Fett’s history with Cad Bane, the pair’s showdown in The Book of Boba Fett episode 7 carried a massive weight in the Star Wars universe despite its hasty conclusion.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars most explicitly detailed Cad Bane and Boba Fett’s relationship. Season 4 of the animated series revealed that Bane had served as a mentor to Fett. Accordingly, The Book of Boba Fett finale confirmed through dialogue that Bane instructed Fett, as well as his father Jango before him. While the two never appeared on screen together in The Clone Wars, the Star Wars show established their once-collaborative dynamic.

Boba Fett’s motivation to kill Cad Bane clearly stemmed from a rupture in the bounty hunters’ former partnership. After Fett’s display of restraint earlier in The Book of Boba Fett finale, he resolved to kill Bane because this was his chance to reverse the power dynamic over his old mentor and close a chapter from his past. The Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni revealed that a duel between the two was planned to occur in the animated series. However, The Clone Wars was canceled before the moment saw the screen. The tense faceoff between Bane and Fett in The Book of Boba Fett constituted the titular character’s most impressive feat in the show and a moment of redemption — even if only Bane uncharacteristically letting his guard down enabled Fett to kill him.

Fans of The Clone Wars might frown upon the live-action Bane’s rapid demise but the character served his purpose in The Book of Boba Fett‘s narrative. While Star Wars could have introduced Bane earlier in the series and made him a more central figure rather than a spontaneous cameo, his presence would have felt more earned. Still, Fett’s defeat of Bane was a fitting note for The Book of Boba Fett to conclude on.
