Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) and Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) would be the perfect couple for the show. Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso has followed both characters through heartbreak from the outset of the series. The pilot episode launches Rebecca into a messy divorce with a cheating ex-husband, and Ted initially accepts the coaching position to give his wife the headspace she requests before the couple’s eventual divorce. By season 2, Ted and Rebecca are both fully single and on the market.

The two characters grow quite close throughout the show and seem to understand each other on a level beyond most of their peers. From the start, Ted recognizes Rebecca’s tough outer shell and slowly chisels away at it through little acts of kindness that brighten her day, even coming to her rescue in season 1, episode 8, “The Diamond Dogs,” by hustling her conniving ex-husband in a public game of darts. Rebecca, likewise, exhibits an awareness and compassion for Ted’s wellbeing following his divorce and often appears to be the only one who has such insight into his mental state. The show briefly teases that Ted is Rebecca’s Bantr match in season 2, episode 5, “Rainbow,” before it’s revealed that she actually matched with Sam (Toheeb Jimoh).

Ted and Rebecca would be the perfect couple for the show because their character arcs have led them to become highly compatible. Even though the series hasn’t directly suggested a romantic relationship between the two, their superior understanding of one another resulting from shared experiences would make them a perfect couple. Their relationship would also serve a strong purpose for the show by creating the potential for large-scale conflict that could affect both characters as well as everyone else at AFC Richmond.

Rebecca understands what Ted is going through better than anyone else. In the surprising Ted Lasso Christmas special, season 2, episode 4, “Carol of the Bells,” she correctly predicts how lonely his first holiday season as a divorcee will be, and surprises him with a day of distributing presents to strangers. In season 2, episode 6, “The Signal,” Rebecca is also the only person who seems concerned about him when he suddenly leaves the match. Ted, for all his outward positivity and perpetual desire to help others, has shown that he often struggles to help himself, but Rebecca sees right through his upbeat façade. Ted, likewise, is perfect for Rebecca because he is the antithesis to her ex-husband. Rather than a philandering narcissist, Ted is kind, caring, and dedicated to the wellbeing of others. He helps Rebecca rediscover her self-worth and understand that her ex-husband is far more pitiable than she is in season 1. In season 2 of Ted Lasso, Rebecca calls Ted when she’s on her way home to have a difficult conversation with her mother because she wants one of his famous pep talks. They have clearly fallen into the habit of relying on each other for support, and this makes them a perfect couple.

Ted and Rebecca getting together would also be great for the show itself because, although they are an ideal match, there could still be bouts of drama and conflict in their relationship. Ted previously slept with Rebecca’s best friend, and although Rebecca encouraged it at the time, the rendezvous could come back to haunt them if they started dating. There’s also the potential drama inherent with dating someone you work with, and since Ted and Rebecca are the head coach and owner of a major football club, their personal lives could regularly clash with their jobs with resounding consequences. Since season 2 of Ted Lasso received backlash early on for not creating any significant conflict, this dynamic could offer a much needed source of drama for the series going forward.

Ted and Rebecca ending up together makes a lot of sense both for the characters and the show. Some viewers think that Rebecca actually matching with Sam on Bantr supplants the possibility of a romance between her and Ted, but the series still has plenty of time to bring the coach and owner together. Even if it doesn’t happen in season 2 of Ted Lasso, Rebecca and Ted are still perfect for each other.
