The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke explains how Patton Oswalt’s strange season 2 cameo came together. Upon its premiere in July 2019, The Boys quickly established itself as the goriest and most twisted superhero show out there. Armed with corrupt heroes, exploding humans, and one ill-fated dolphin, The Boys won over fans and critics on its way to becoming Amazon’s biggest show of the year. With the enthusiastic reception it got, it was no surprise that The Boys would soon be renewed for season 2 (and, before season 2 even arrived, season 3 as well).

Amazon finally premiered the first three episodes of The Boys season 2 this past Friday, with the remaining installments rolling out weekly. Even before the season began, fans knew there would be a lot going on. Not only does season 2 feature the arrival of new Seven member Stormfront (Aya Cash), but it also deals with the fallout of season 1’s devastating cliffhanger involving Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his supposedly deceased wife. Much like the first batch of episodes, The Boys season 2 has already promised to include some truly strange and disturbing sequences, with one such scene arriving in episode 2.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Season 1 of The Boys fully established The Deep (Chace Crawford) as a character with a highly questionable track record. Season 2 finds The Deep doing some serious soul-searching, which leads to a scene in episode 2 where he takes some mushrooms and has a conversation with his gills. Yes, his gills. Sharp-eared fans will have noted Oswalt provided the voice of the gills, and Kripke outlined how Oswalt got involved in an interview with TVLine:

We were actually in post [production], we’d already shot it — that was right around when Season 1 premiered — and Patton, who’s an amazing guy, reached out to me, like just on Twitter, to say, “I’m a huge fan of the show.” I was like, “Oh, my God, thank you so much!” and he said, “If you ever have a role for me, let me know,” and I was like, “Funny you should ask, because I actually do have something you could do for Season 2, if you wanted.” For me, the guy who is the lead in Ratatouille and The Secret Life of Pets 2, a beloved animation voice, [as] the voice of Deep’s man-ginas was just too delicious to pass up. [Laughs] He came out to a recording studio in the Valley, and we were there, and we just recorded all the dialogue. He couldn’t be a better, nicer guy.

While not quite the strangest thing The Boys has done, hearing The Deep’s gills speak definitely came as quite the shock. The Deep is nearing rock bottom (if he hasn’t hit it already), and there’s something rather amusing about the way his abnormal body helped him reach a vital breakthrough. That it came in just episode 2 shows The Deep is in for quite the journey throughout this season, though where he will go remains to be seen.

It’s safe to say this wasn’t exactly the role many were envisioning for Oswalt, who has supplied several memorable voice roles over the years. Still, it’s a fitting role for The Boys, a show that’s constantly pushing boundaries with its gruesome visuals. The Deep’s gills don’t quite compare to some of The Boys‘ other jaw-dropping moments, but it still demonstrates the strange heights this show is willing to visit. Fans are likely excited (and slightly wary) to see what will come next.
