The incredibly talented storytellers at Telltale Games reveal why they chose the main character of Camina Drummer for their upcoming The Expanse: A Telltale Game and why her backstory could make it a must-play for fans of The Expanse books and Amazon series.

Many fans credit Telltale for reviving the adventure game genre. During its height, Telltale Games earned a large fanbase and great reviews for their episodic games like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us in the early 2010s. The episodic format allowed the developer to release their games in chapters instead of as one extensive experience that saw players’ choices and progress carry over as each chapter was released. However, between 2013 and Telltale Games sudden shut down in 2018, the developer released a total of eleven series containing over sixty chapters of episodic content. However, excitement levels grew even further once it was announced that the company would be releasing The Wolf Among Us 2 and a prequel to the popular Amazon series and space-opera book series The Expanse.

Players will not be taking control of one of The Expanse’s space-faring main characters seen in the show or books, but instead, they will take control of Camina Drummer, a Belter, a human not born on either of the series human homeworlds of Earth or Mars. As reported by Game Informer, the developers wanted to tell the story of a character more unknown to the sci-fi series because it gives the team the creative freedom to tell the story they wanted to tell. In the interview, the current head of Telltale, Jamie Ottilie, says that because Drummer doesn’t exist in the books, she was the perfect character to focus on in the upcoming game. Fans will join a crew of strong personalities while they make life or death decisions in a scavenging vessel exploring locations and mysteries of The Expanse‘s solar system.

The developers at Telltale Games first felt apprehension when pitching the idea of a game set before the events of the series to its creators. Such doubts we squashed because they saw the opportunity to grow The Expanse’s lore by adding backstory to a character who has not received one in the books. While there are plans to include some characters from The Expanse show into the game’s story, fans will have to wait to see what the game developers have planned.

While many are very happy to see the return of Telltale Games, others are not soon to forget the developer’s previously buggy engine and canceled projects like a Telltale Stranger Things game and Game of Thrones sequel. Nevertheless, with new management, game engine, and partnerships, Telltale Games looks to be making a solid comeback. History may repeat itself if Telltale Games can deliver captivating new narratives with The Expanse: A Telltale Game for a new audience like they did ten years previously with The Walking Dead.

The Expanse: A Telltale Game currently has no release date.
