The Fear the Walking Dead season 6 premiere just introduced a mysterious key, which is sure to be important to the story in the foreseeable future. The key made its first appearance in the beginning of the episode when Emile, a deadly bounty hunter, came looking for a man named Walter. In Walter’s possession was a key that he tried — and failed — to keep hidden from Emile.

Following Walter’s death at the hands of Emile, the episode shifted its attention to the bounty hunters’ next target: Morgan Jones (Lennie James). After being hired by Virginia (Colby Minifie), Emile went on a hunt for Morgan, who spent most of the episode trying to help Isaac, a man desperate to get back to his pregnant wife. In order to do this, Morgan had to get through Emile, who proved to be a formidable challenge. After a tough battle, Morgan defeated Emile and decapitated him with the bounty hunter’s  own axe. Before departing, Morgan found Walter’s key on Emile’s body and decided to take it for himself, despite not knowing what purpose it served.

A clue to what the key is for was offered in the finale’s fine scene, which showed two characters standing outside a large, beached submarine. One of them spray paints the message, “The End is the Beginning,” on the submarine. It’s revealed that the two are waiting for someone to arrive with the key, but for a reason they don’t know since the mysterious individual hasn’t shown up yet. It would seem that one of the people that they were waiting for was Walter, but now this person isn’t coming, and the key they need is now with Morgan. As for what it may open, it seems likely that it’s connected in some way to the submarine.

It’s possible that the key will give these men access to missiles on submarine. If this the case, that would explain why the key is so important to the show right now. Whoever holds the key would also hold a great deal of power in the Walking Dead universe. Based on her conversation with Emile, Virginia doesn’t appear to be aware of it, and she also wasn’t the person who sent him to kill Walter. This would indicate that another villain – or group of villains – is entering the picture.

The introduction of the key and the submarine suggests that the new season won’t simply be about Morgan and the rest of his group going up against Virginia and the Pioneers. They’ll also have to contend with whoever hired Emile, and possibly the people who were waiting for Walter to arrive with the key. What may further complicate this story is Virginia’s Pioneers, especially if she discovers the importance of the key. Either way, by taking it, Morgan has put himself at the center of a new conflict that may bring him and his friends a tremendous amount of trouble in Fear the Walking Dead season 6.
