The finale for Rick and Morty season 5 was expected to air on August 15, 2021 — but the hour-long special was delayed. Rick and Morty season 5 debuted on June 20, 2021, with episodes releasing weekly on Sundays. The season — which was part of the landmark 70-episode deal Adult Swim made with the show’s creators back in 2018 — was expected to end in August, but now the show is on hiatus.

Rick and Morty season 5, episode 8 redeemed the otherwise mixed batch of episodes in the show’s latest installment. While the premiere, which introduced Rick’s rival, started season 5 on the right foot, there have been several episodes that were met with lukewarm receptions. Whether it be Morty’s mutant sperm or a Thanksgiving-themed episode in July, several of Rick and Morty‘s season 5 entries didn’t feel up to the show’s usual high standards.

However, Rick and Morty season 5, episode 8 “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Morts” largely made up for the previous weaker episodes, offering never-before-seen insight into the titular scientist — including the truth behind his relationship with Birdperson, as well as why he’s so hated by the other Ricks. No doubt many fans were hoping for a continuation of this story — but they’ll have to wait. Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are ending season 5 with a feature-length finale, which airs on September 5.

At this time, it’s unclear why the final two episodes of Rick and Morty season 5 are being delayed. Fans are no doubt frustrated by the hiatus because it’s so close to the end of the season. The Adult Swim promo announcing the air date at least confirmed that the episodes would air together, and hinted at what to expect: in what is most likely the cold open, Morty is seen using Rick’s portal gun without permission. Frustrated, Rick spins a wheel to pick a “replacement.”

So what will the hour-long finale be about? The original titles for the Rick and Morty season 5 episodes are references: “Forgetting Sarick Mortshall” and “Rickmurai Jack,” which are takes on the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the animated series Samurai Jack. It’s possible that episode 9’s title, which references the breakup film, is mainly about Rick and Morty dealing with being apart — that certainly fits with what was shown in the promo. How Samurai Jack fits into things is much harder to guess. One thing is known for sure, however: the Rick and Morty season 5 finale is highly anticipated!
