Many fans are wondering why there is no new episode of Superman and Lois this week and on what date the popular Arrowverse series will return. Some believed the show’s hiatus was due to it falling within the week many American schools celebrate Spring Break and many students and families aren’t watching TV due to being on vacation. A more likely explanation, however, is that Superman and Lois took a break in order to allow it and The Flash to synch up their schedules starting on the week of March 21, 2022.

It was only recently that the CW began to return to a traditional broadcast schedule following the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Generally, the network has tried to stagger the release of the Arrowverse shows so there were not too many superhero shows on at once. However, the network simultaneously tried to keep those series that were airing together on a similar schedule, not letting one have any more episodes aired than the rest. This is why Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow premiered on the same day and went on hiatus at the same times throughout the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 season. The CW seems to be trying to arrange a similar parity between Superman and Lois and The Flash.

The Flash recently returned from its winter break following the five-part Armageddon event with season 8 episode 6, entitled “Impulsive Excessive Disorder”. This week, while Superman and Lois is on a brief hiatus, The Flash season 8 episode 7 will be airing in its new regular time slot on Wednesday evenings. The latest episode of Superman and Lois to air was season 2 episode 7, “Anti-Hero”, so by taking a one-week break, the CW has ensured that both series will be airing their new episodes in synch starting next week.

There are several reasons why the CW should do this. The chief one is a matter of scheduling, as keeping the Arrowverse series running together also allows them to be better spaced out across the broadcast year. It also allows the shows’ creators to better plan out DC Comics Easter eggs between the Arrowverse shows and potentially schedule crossover events.

While this has proven impossible in recent years due to shooting restrictions mandated by the pandemic—specifically where Superman and Lois is concerned—the Arrowverse showrunners do seem to be getting back into the swing of things, with The Flash‘s Armageddon event featuring a number of Arrowverse cameos. The Flash also recently referenced the Arrowverse’s version of Booster Gold, who was introduced in the Legends of Tomorrow season 7 finale. It is unknown if this means that Superman and Lois might begin to acknowledge its shared universe as well after standing alone for so long, but the potential is there.

Superman & Lois returns Tuesday, March 22, on The CW.
