Why Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man Audition Was So Special

The fight choreographer for Captain America: Civil War recently explained why Tom Holland’s audition to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man is regarded by many at Marvel Studios as a special one. Holland debuted as the MCU’s Spider-Man/Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War before appearing in his first solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Holland went on to star in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame alongside the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes before appearing in two more solo films, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Holland’s most recent appearance as Spider-Man in the MCU during No Way Home was met with extremely positive reactions. No Way Home continued the trend of recent Marvel properties introducing and engaging with the Multiverse. Thanks to Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) role in the film, Holland had the opportunity to team up with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Both Maguire and Garfield have taken on the Spider-Man/Peter Parker role before, so seeing the three different versions of the character come together was historic.

James Young, the fight choreographer for Civil War, recently spoke with YouTube’s Corridor Crew (via The Direct) about being present for Holland’s Spider-Man audition. While Holland’s incredible audition has been discussed in the past, Young goes into further detail about what exactly made it so special. Thanks to a display of gymnastics experience and an attitude similar to Peter Parker’s, Young remembered how everyone in the room immediately felt that Holland was perfect for the role. “This kid just came in and just… that’s Peter Parker. That’s Peter Parker. There’s no other way about it. So, to see him come in and do that and literally leave the heads of studios with their mouth on the floor, it was one of the most special things I’ve ever witnessed. And then to finally design the Cap and Spidey fight, the Spidey fight’s so much fun.”

Delighting the likes of the Russo Brothers, the directors behind some of the MCU’s most ambitious team-up films, and Chris Evans, who plays Captain America/Steve Rogers in the MCU, was no small feat, but Holland pulled it off. The faith that Young and everyone else at Marvel Studios put in Holland to take on the Spider-Man mantle in the MCU was not misplaced as Holland would go on to become one of the most iconic members of the franchise. No Way Home tied up many of Holland’s Spider-Man’s stories in the MCU, but the good news is that Marvel Studios’ captivation with Holland means that they have a fourth Spider-Man film in early development.

The MCU’s Peter Parker has overcome many obstacles since his debut in Civil War. However, the loss of his loved ones at the end of No Way Home set the character up to be challenged in many new ways whenever Holland makes his return as Spider-Man. But, until an older, possibly grittier version of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man/Peter Parker appears, memories of the actor’s passion and enthusiasm will always make the beginning of his MCU journey special.
