Tyler Hoechlin’s Clark Kent will have a new supersuit for Superman & Lois, and there are two reasons for that. Hoechlin was previously best known for his role as Derek Hale on Teen Wolf before he joined the Arrowverse as its resident Man of Steel. For some time, his appearances were largely kept to a recurring role on Supergirl and the annual crossovers. However, following the game-changing events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, it was announced Hoechlin, along with Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane, would receive his own spin-off show. Superman & Lois is set to premiere in a little less than two weeks.

Though there have been many stories about this iconic couple, Superman & Lois looks to take things in a different direction by focusing on the two as parents. At the start of Crisis on Infinite Earths, they had a baby boy named Jonathan. At the end of it, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) had grown into a teenager and received a brother, another teen named Jordan (Alex Garfin). Needless to say, this is quite a change for the titular pair, and the series will follow their struggles as parents balancing those roles with their bigger, world-famous ones.

As Superman & Lois attempts to reframe the characters at its center, it will give them some new looks. It’s already been reported that Clark will have a brand new Superman suit, and the reasons for why that is have been revealed. At the Television Critics Association panel for Superman & Lois (via Alex Zalben), it was said that the Superman suit change came about for two reasons. One: According to Hoechlin, Clark is at a new point of his life. Two: For practical reasons, they needed a suit that would last for a whole series, not a handful of episodes.

Both reasons make perfect sense, though the first certainly holds more creative weight. As Superman is someone who has been depicted onscreen many times before, Superman & Lois will need to find new ways to make him stand out. The focus on his time as a father will help, but it’s also important that he has his own style, one that reflects his developed characterization. Hence, the arrival of Hoechlin’s new costume.

Much of the marketing so far for Superman & Lois has presented the series as more of a family drama than a superhero show, so it will be quite interesting to see how things like supersuits and villains factor into Clark and Lois’ quiet lifestyle. The new costume seems to fit in with the grounded take on the high-flying hero, and fans likely can’t wait to see it in action. Presumably, the style will evolve even more if Superman & Lois continues for several seasons. For now, though, let’s see how season 1 goes.

Superman & Lois premieres on Tuesday, February 23 on the CW.
