Why Valheim’s Boats Keep Flying Away

After an incredible first month that saw over 5 million downloads, Valheim is in Steam Early Access and more popular than ever. With its survival and sandbox elements, there’s a lot to love about Valheim‘s Viking aesthetic and mysterious world. One of the biggest mysteries in the game, however, might just be what’s causing longboats to suddenly take to the skies and fly away.

There’s a lot of fantasy creatures to discover in Valheim, whether it’s trolls invading a player’s base or drakes that swarm around the mountaintops. There’s also plenty of Viking myth and folklore to keep up with, including the giant tree that stretches across the sky. One of the most mysterious and awe-inspiring moments in Valheim, however, is a complete accident. It’s the ships that players spot sailing through the air and disappearing over the horizon. So, just what exactly is causing these boats to fly?

At first, Valheim‘s flying boats seemed to be the result of a bug which had birds landing on the boats and then carrying them along when taking flight again. This rumor got a lot of traction on social media, but it’s since been shut down by Valheim‘s developer, Iron Gate Studio. Even if birds aren’t running off with the boats, there still has to be some explanation for why boats are flying away.

Reasons Valheim’s Boats Could Be Flying Away

Officially, Iron Gate Studio did not offer a reason for Valheim‘s flying boats. The developers denied the bird rumor, but said there was a chance that birds could turn into boats (which sounds even better) due to the way coding in Valheim works. This is really at the heart of the most likely reason Valheim‘s boats keep flying away.

Valheim is still in early access, and its barely in its second month, which means problems are going to persist while developers work out the quirks of the game. The flying boats are probably just a glitch that developers will patch out with an update. It may not sound as cool as birds flying off with longboats, but it’s the most likely reason at this point. Until Valheim‘s early access period is over, problems like flying boats are probably just a side product of a game that’s still being developed.

Valheim continues getting regular updates, so the flying boats glitch may not be in the game much longer. And now that the flying boats are getting so much attention, Iron Gate Studio may even prioritize fixing the issue. While it may not be as fun as the idea of birds flying off with people’s ships, it’s still pretty crazy seeing a ship flying through the sky in Valheim.
