For all the talk of how difficult Valheim is, it can also be a remarkably relaxing game. An afternoon of chopping tress in the forest can be quite serene – until a near-endless horde of Greydwarves shows up to ruin the mood. These grown-up versions of Valheim‘s Greylings are surprisingly stealthy and can quickly overwhelm a lone Viking. Worse still, they just keep coming. If the forest seems full of these hostile mobs, there may be a Nest nearby. Here’s how to deal with one.

Greydwarves (or “Greydwarfs,” depending on preference) are an enemy type introduced early on in Valheim. The lesser form, Greylings, are a common sight and often spawn as soon as a player touches down in a new server. They’re a constant nuisance, as they lack the strength to really be too much of an issue and instead just serve to interrupt whatever the player might be doing. Having to take a break from chopping wood in order to chop down a Greyling is commonplace. They’re not much more than cannon-fodder and are easily dispatched. It’s not until players start encountering their more powerful brethren that the threat of the Greydwarves becomes apparent.

Greydwarves make their homes in the Black Forest, the second biome in Valheim. As the name suggests, it’s a densely packed woodland, filled with tall pines, gnarled roots, and large boulders. The resource-rich environment is ideal for collecting the raw materials needed to build up the perfect Valheim home, except for the danger of the Greydwarves. In this biome, there are three types of “adult” Greylings to contend with: the basic Greydwarf, the bigger and stronger Greydwarf Brute, and the magic-using Greydwarf Shaman. They often roam in packs consisting of a few of these varieties, making them very dangerous.

Valheim: How To Stop Greydwarves From Spawning

While these packs can spawn randomly, there may be a spawner nearby if there seems to be a high concentration of them. The Greydwarf Nest acts as a spawn point for these enemies, and it will continue to generate Greydwarves until it is destroyed. The hardest part about getting rid of Nests is fighting through the spawned enemies around them, as the Nests themselves aren’t very tough. It isn’t at all necessary to clear-cut Valheim’s forest to cull these pests and their spawn points (though it does make for a good story); instead, a few axe strikes should take them down.

Destroying a Greydwarf Nest will make working in the Black Forest easier, but players may also wish to consider using Nests to their benefit. Seeing as how they will continually spawn in enemies, Nests have the potential to grant infinite resources, provided the player is capable of handling all of those enemies. In addition to dropping the occasional trophy, Greydwarves also drop Greydwarf Eyes. These are used in some crafting recipes – most notably Portals. Greydwarves can also drop the important Ancient Seed items, which are used to summon one of Valheim‘s bosses. These two useful drops may be worth the effort of farming a Nest, at least for a little while.

Once players have built a few Portals and used those Ancient Seeds to get past the boss, it’s probably in their best interest to destroy the Greydwarf Nest. Having one less thing to worry about can make a huge difference, especially later on in the game, so knowing how to defeat enemies – as well as how to stop them from spawning – can provide a helpful boost in Valheim.
