Scarlet Witch’s costume evolved in WandaVision, and here’s why her Marvel Cinematic Universe look was reinvented. Elizabeth Olsen has been part of the MCU since a cameo as Wanda Maximoff at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After multiple supporting roles in the movies, Marvel Studios gave Wanda’s story the attention it needed with WandaVision. The series explored her grief and traumatic past, but it ended with Wanda becoming the Scarlet Witch. She learned of her use of Chaos Magic and gave herself an amazing new costume in the process.

Prior to the transformation at the end of WandaVision, Scarlet Witch’s MCU costumes changed repeatedly. She was mostly in civilian clothes for Avengers: Age of Ultron, so her true superhero look didn’t come until Captain America: Civil War. The scarlet-colored corset and long jacket became what Wanda wore in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It wasn’t until the conclusion of WandaVision that she got her new outfit that reinvents Scarlet Witch’s look for the MCU again.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The new Scarlet Witch costume WandaVision introduces is the first to properly include the character’s headdress from the comics. It is smaller and more practical for the purposes of the MCU, and the rest of the costume appears to be made of armor to offer Wanda more protection in battle. There is even a Vision/Mind Stone Easter egg in the neckline. This new costume came only after Wanda accepted that she was the Scarlet Witch. It highlights how much she’s evolved and the magical powers she is learning to better control. The updated suit has differences from the comics, but Marvel made the right decision to change the look for live-action. This decision was seemingly driven by the story and listening to Olsen’s ideas about where Scarlet Witch should go.

Scarlet Witch’s new MCU costume is a major departure from the character’s classic costume. However, WandaVision still managed to include an homage to Wanda’s original look thanks to Olsen. The actress was relieved to know she wouldn’t have to wear Scarlet Witch’s original comic costume when she first joined the MCU. This is because Scarlet Witch’s leotard comic costume is quite revealing. After playing the character for so long, though, Olsen was the one who pushed for WandaVision‘s Halloween version of the costume to go as far as it did. With co-star Paul Bettany wearing a cheap version of Vision’s classic look, Olsen wanted to do the same with Scarlet Witch at last.

Olsen won’t be suiting up in a real version of Scarlet Witch’s classic costume anytime soon, as the new MCU suit is more aligned with what she’s wanted for years. She noted that Wanda’s MCU costume was the only one to show cleavage and expressed a desire for that to change. While Black Widow, Valkyrie, Gamora, and other female heroes have costumes that cover them up and offer more protection, Wanda’s previous look stood out as even more impractical. That won’t be an issue with Scarlet Witch’s new look after WandaVision.
