Warning: SPOILERS for Black Widow.

A young Natasha Romanoff has blue hair in Black Widow‘s prologue sequence, which exemplifies her conviction to get into character. Much of the long-awaited Black Widow movie focuses on Natasha’s previous life as an assassin before she defected to SHIELD, and it all begins with her as a child in 1995 embedded into a Russian family undercover in Ohio. It’s a storyline reminiscent of the acclaimed series The Americans, in which two Soviet spies stole government secrets while deceiving people that they were, in fact, Americans.

The key difference between that show and Black Widow is that Natasha, though not even a teenager yet at this point in the MCU timeline, was already trained, as Red Guardian hints at when Dreykov has Yelena taken away. Natasha wasn’t in the dark about their true mission; she knew what Alexei meant when he said they were going on an adventure, plus she spoke Russian and could take one of the soldier’s firearms without him stopping her. All of this is evidence of why she had blue hair at the time.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Right from an early age, Natasha has viewed her hair color as part of her uniform, and she’s often changed the color whenever she’s changed identities. It was no different when she was a kid in Ohio. Presumably, to blend into the American society and sort of keep up with modern trends, she dyed her hair blue. It’s such a subtle detail, yet one that establishes her as one of the best operatives the Red Room has ever doled out. And she’s maintained this element of her persona throughout her life, even dying her hair blonde at the end of the film.

Even beyond blending in or sticking out – depending on who’s asked, as Yelena thinks Natasha likes doing superhero poses to get attention – her blue hair also highlights her personality. Long before she became a SHIELD agent and, later, an Avenger, Natasha stood out from her comrades. Like Clint Barton, she was unique and gifted; it’s, unfortunately, what both Dreykov and the Red Guardian saw in her when she was still a kid. They knew she would be skilled at killing people. Part of that “fire” and spirit is represented in her hair colors.

Throughout Black Widow, Natasha is seen with three hair colors – blue, red, and blonde – with the final color being what she had throughout the time she was on the run with Captain America, and in Avengers: Infinity War. She had a mixture of blonde and red in Avengers: Endgame, all the way up to her untimely death on Vormir. Now it just remains to be seen if Yelena will follow in Natasha’s footsteps and dye her hair as well when she returns in the Hawkeye series in late 2021.
