Wesley Crusher has recently been added to Star Trek Fleet Command as a playable character, and Wil Wheaton couldn’t be happier. The actor describes the experience as “satisfying.” He’s also excited for the future of Fleet Command and other Star Trek games.

Since debuting in 1966, the Star Trek franchise has played host to a wide array of games. Many of these include board games, such as a version of Monopoly. However, the series has also ventured into video games. Star Trek Fleet Command is one such example, released in 2018. It’s a mobile strategy game, with a combat system that turn-based action with real-time gameplay. This makes it somewhat similar to a MOBA like Pokémon Unite, which uses characters with abilities on cooldown.

The same update that added Picard also added Wesley Crusher from The Next Generation. In an interview with Screen Rant, actor Wil Wheaton described hearing about Wesley’s inclusion as “super cool.” As for other Star Trek games, Wheaton singled out “Starship Bridge [and] Starfleet Battle simulators.” The full quote is as follows:

“Star Trek is a thing that is an enormous part of my life; that I’m crazy about and that I absolutely love. There are these amazing Star Trek simulators, like Starship Bridge simulators and really amazing, complicated Starfleet Battle simulators. There’s an online Star Trek game, and I believe they just opened up access to Wesley Crusher as a playable character for the very first time. That kind of stuff is super cool, and it’s really satisfying to be in. It feels like, “Way to go, kid! You’re getting some accolades. Good for you, buddy!” And I feel really excited about that.”

It’s all especially poignant, considering how poorly Wesley Crusher was initially received. At the time, many fans downright hated the character – and by extension, Wheaton himself. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the reason Wheaton ended up exiting Star Trek. Despite the backlash, Wheaton continues to cherish the role he played in Star Trek history. Fan reception has improved over time, possibly due to Wheaton’s continued participation in all things Star Trek. Few companies would want to add Wesley as a playable character if he didn’t have some kind of fanbase, after all.

It’s worth noting that, despite Wesley’s appearance, Wheaton has not collaborated with Star Trek Fleet Command in any official capacity. This is especially odd considering the actor’s overall involvement in the Star Trek community. He’s not shy about his love for the franchise, as seen above. It’s possible that a team-up between him and the game could occur in the future, however. He’s done voice acting for titles such as Fallout: New Vegas and Grand Theft Auto V. Wheaton is also behind the interactive Facebook Watch experience Rival Peak. Voicing his own character in a game would likely be an easy feat.

For now, though, the actor is ecstatic that Star Trek continues to be relevant and popular. It’s played such a monumental role in his career and personal life. Whether or not Wheaton will get involved properly with Star Trek: Fleet Command remains to be seen. Wil Wheaton may not have reached the Final Frontier yet, but he’s boldly going wherever life takes him and his legacy.
