Will there ever be a Borat 3? Fourteen years after starring in the 2006 mockumentary Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen reprised his character for the 2020 follow-up Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, with both comedies exploring American culture through the eyes of a journalist from Kazakhstan. Directed by Jason Woliner, the sequel includes a final act plot reveal that links to the original film, leaving fans to wonder about the potential storyline for a third movie.

In Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Cohen’s character receives an important government mission after spending 14 years in a labor camp. He must restore Kazakhstan’s reputation or be killed. Borat travels to America and decides to offer his 15-year-old daughter, Tutar (Maria Bakalova), to a prominent U.S. politician. Together, the father and daughter learn about American customs in the Deep South, along with QAnon and the COVID-19 pandemic. As Tutar gains more confidence and cleans up her appearance, Borat strategizes to save his life.

Towards the end of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Borat begins questioning his beliefs. It seems that Borat no longer wants to keep his daughter in a cage, nor does he want Tutar to marry an American politician. So, Borat puts on his most seductive outfit and thinks of a better way to handle the situation, resulting in several hilarious moments during the last 15 minutes of the mockumentary.

Will Borat 3 Happen?

Given the 14-year gap between Borat and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, it’s unclear if and when Borat 3 will be produced. However, the mere existence of the second film (along with its release prior to the 2020 U.S. president election) implies that Cohen will continue to troll Americans in the years to come. It’s no accident that Borat re-emerged during the Trump presidency, and the Borat 3 timeline may ultimately depend on the results of the November 2020 election. If Joe Biden wins, it’s likely that Borat and Tutar may remain in their native Kazakhstan for four more years. If Trump manages to get re-elected, though, expect Borat 3 to be greenlit prior to 2024. Assuming that Borat Subsequent Moviefilm will be popular amongst streamers, a third movie will presumably be released on Amazon Prime.

Borat 3 Release Date

As of now, Cohen will star in an upcoming adaptation of Mandrake the Magician. Moving forward, it’s safe to assume that Borat 3 could release sometime before 2024 given the current political climate in America, and also because society has changed so much since Borat first released in 2006. So, Cohen may want to keep his character relevant, even if Cohen himself doesn’t necessarily have a need to stay relevant as performer.

Borat 3 Story Details

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm ends with Borat’s life being spared, and features a clever tie-in to the 2006 movie. Upon returning home, Borat discovers the true reason why the Kazakhstan government sent him to America: to spread the Coronavirus across the world as “Patient Zero” – revenge for the country being laughed at upon the release of Borat. Cohen’s character then whips out his “magical calculator” in a bluff to secure leverage against the government, and manages to make the deal of a lifetime. Kazakhstan becomes a feminist nation, and traffics grooms as their primary import/export operation. Now part of the global community, Kazakhstan residents have the ability to influence elections around the world, just like other countries with internet access.

Anything can happen for Borat 3, of course, and the narrative will most likely revolve around the biggest political stories of the upcoming years. Sure, Cohen’s character does indeed have some personal issues to address, but he appears to be a changed man after all of his experiences with Tutar in America. Fans of the franchise may be anticipating another U.S.-set tale for Borat 3, but don’t be surprised if the third movie takes place elsewhere, if only to provide audiences with even more unique perspectives about specific cultures.
