Could Chance Chancellor return to The Young & The Restless in the future, despite Donny Boaz’s surprise departure? The actor abruptly shared the news he had stopped portraying Phillip “Chance” Chancellor in CBS’s The Young & The Restless last February, but it wasn’t purely a personal decision. Boaz joined the cast of the long-running soap opera back in 2019, where he was a series regular. In the past, the actor had recurring roles in different TV shows and television films, also appearing in acclaimed TV series such as Lucifer and NCIS: New Orleans.

Boaz’s Chance Chancellor had previously been portrayed by various child actors, with YOU‘s Penn Badgley being the last one to do so from 2000 to 2001. After that, the role was reprised by John Driscoll first, from 2009 to 2011, and Boaz afterward, for the past two years. His character, Chance, was the son of wealthy Phillip Chancellor III and Nina Webster. CBS’s The Young & The Restless first aired in 1973, and it initially focused on two families, the Brooks and the Foster, before including more from the fictional version of Genoa City, Wisconsin, where the series is set.

Donny Boaz shared the news of his departure in February 2021 with an Instagram post, but there have been hints that his character may still return. That’s despite his announcement (via People), stating that Chance would not be recast or killed off. The actor subsequently added that he was not angry or bitter, only sad he could not see through his character’s storyline he invested in for a year. Since then, with Boaz focusing on his future away from The Young & The Restless, rumors have suggested that Chance survived his apparent death scene and will return – presumably played by a new actor. He’s being mentioned on the show, intriguingly, despite his disappearance, a casting call seems to fit his description, and a deleted Instagram post is being pointed to as evidence that Chance could return.

The reason for Donny Boaz’s departure is unknown, and his original words never suggested he chose to leave Chance or The Young & The Restless. Some outlets speculated that his political leanings were the cause of his dismissal from the show, but those rumors were never confirmed. And while Boaz promised Chance wouldn’t be recast, the stars seem to be aligning for Chance’s return. A casting call from The Young and The Restless seems to match the physical description of Chance, though that could be explained away as coincidence. More intriguingly, Victoria Newman actress, Amelie Heinle briefly shared a behind-the-scenes picture on Instagram which includes Chance’s name with an exclamation mark on a banner, seemingly pointing to a coming home party. Chance’s wife Abby’s understandable refusal to accept he was killed in a bombing during his mysterious mission also points to further developments in the story.

The show obviously heavily implied that Chance died in the bombing of the building where he was working undercover, but this wouldn’t be the first time a character had returned from the dead. The Young & The Restless could even use the bombing as a means to explain why Chance looks so different.
