The first two games in the series were a massive success for Bandai Namco, so will Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 ever happen? The Dragon Ball franchise began way back in 1984 with the original manga series by Akira Toriyama, which followed lead character Goku as he set out on an epic adventure to find the Dragon Balls. It didn’t take long for the manga to receive an anime adaptation, in addition to assorted animated movies and other spinoffs over the years.

The franchise also received an ill-fated live-action adaptation in 2009 from director James Wong (Final Destination), which starred Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-fat and Emmy Rossum (Shameless). While it turned a modest profit it received horrible reviews, with screenwriter Ben Ramsey later apologizing for his part in the movie’s failure. The franchise’s action-packed premise lends itself well to gaming, so it’s no surprise it has received a lot of video game adaptations such as Dragon Ball FighterZ and the Dragon Ball Xenoverse titles.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Dragon Ball Xenoverse series features a twisty time-travel plot that allows fans to revisit famous events from the series. In addition to receiving strong reviews, the games have collectively sold over ten million copies worldwide. So when can fans expect a Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3?

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Hasn’t Been Announced Yet

Surprisingly, despite the financial success of the first two titles, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 has yet to be even confirmed by the developers. The Xenoverse games will presumably be continued based on the strength of the sales alone, but while Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 received plenty of DLC support, there has been little sign of a third game.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Release Date

Since Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 has yet to be officially announced, there’s no indication of a release date either. Fans are hoping the title will finally be confirmed at E3 2019 for a possible 2020 release. While a new Dragon Ball game is likely to be announced at E3, time will tell if it will be a continuation of the Xenoverse series.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3’s Story

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 will almost certainly continue the twisty timeline shenanigans that have set the series apart. The second game ended on a note that suggests the Time Patroller – the main character of the game – will seek out the first game’s Time Patroller to fight and see who is more powerful.

That’s a pretty strong hook to work from and there are still plenty of other characters and lore from the long-running saga a Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 could draw from. While some fans have expressed concern over the lack of concrete movement on a third game, the robust sales of the Xenoverse titles all but guarantee at least one last installment will happen.
