Will Forte Reads Hilarious Scene From MacGruber TV Show

Fans of the foul-mouthed special Ops agent, MacGruber, just received a taste of what’s in store for the character as star Will Forte reads a hilarious scene from the upcoming Peacock series during an interview. Originally a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live, Forte portrayed the character of MacGruber as a parody of the 1985 action series, MacGyver. Where MacGyver could always use his military training to get himself out of any trouble by the end of each episode, Forte’s MacGruber always ended up distracting himself with various personal problems that would result in getting himself (and his colleagues) blown up at the end of every sketch.

MacGruber became such a popular skit on the late night sketch show, that Forte went on to portray the character in a 2010 feature film of the same name. Though the movie bombed at the box office (grossing a little over $9 million against a $10 million budget) and also received mostly negative reviews from critics, Forte’s film still managed to become a fan-favorite. So much so, that back in January of 2020, NBCUniversal announced that MacGruber would return as an eight episode series for their Peacock streaming service. Now, eager fans can finally get a taste of what Forte has in store for the character.

During an episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Forte read a hilarious (spoiler-free) scene from Peacock’s upcoming MacGruber TV show. During the scene, MacGruber explains why the world is worth saving, making sure to list off his favorite things, which includes “kicking back with a cold Molson and watching the game.” The parody character even mentions that cancer and type II diabetes are in fact a good thing, since they remind him that life is precious. The entire speech is absurd and is delivered in Forte’s signature MacGruber over-serious ramble. Watch the scene unfold below:

Back in August of 2020, Peacock released a teaser trailer for the new MacGruber series that is comprised of clips from the film until the very end. Both the teaser and the YouTube clip above also offer insight into the way that Forte plans on portraying his popular character on the small screen. While the clip featured plenty of “bleeped” words, MacGruber’s profanity also opted for more traditional spoonerisms such as “bunchin’ mox” and “gits and shiggles.” Accommodating such TV standards is surely an apt tribute to the MacGyver series that inspired the parody.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from the clip is the humor that arises during the scene. Throughout the scene, laughter from the Late Night crew can be heard in response to Forte’s reading. Though the 2010 MacGruber film may have bombed with critics, it’s clear that fans appreciated its style of humor. If the new MacGruber series for Peacock is half as funny as the laughter that arises during Forte’s reading, then fans of the character are sure to have blast with it.
