Will Future Man Season 4 Ever Happen?

Future Man season 4 isn’t happening on Hulu, and it doesn’t need to considering how season 3 ended. The sci-fi comedy was created by Sausage Party‘s Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg. Starring Josh Hutcherson, Eliza Coupe, and Derek Wilson in the lead roles, Future Man also featured guest appearances by Rogen, along with other notable actors, like Awkwafina, Haley Joel Osment, and Will Forte.

Marked by the undeniable humor stylings of its creators, Future Man could be crude and gross. Still, it managed to stand out in a genre that is often poorly executed. The jokes were consistent, the characters were charming, and it never tried to be more than what it was. So, of course, Future Man fans are understandably hopeful for more tales of the janitor/gamer who was recruited to save the world by a pair of soldiers from the future.

But the digital space is crowded, and Hulu has other projects in the works now that they’re owned by Disney. And so, Future Man season 4 isn’t in the cards, as the story of Josh Futturman, Tiger, and Wolf came to an end with Future Man season 3.

Future Man Season 3 Is The End

Hulu has been very firm that it is done with Future Man. Back in April 2019, the streaming platform announced that it had renewed the show for season 3. At the same time, it was also confirmed that Future Man season 3 would be the last, and it would only have eight episodes as opposed to the previous seasons, which were comprised of 13. While a cancellation was disappointing, at least the renewal/cancellation announcement allowed writers to approach Future Man season 3 knowing that they had to creatively wrap things up and leave no loose storylines.

Why Future Man Season 4 Isn’t Happening

The creators and stars have not commented on why exactly Future Man was canceled. However, the show was by no means a premium entity for Hulu. It didn’t win awards, and it didn’t capture the attention of mainstream critics. It was a time-travel comedy that, like every other scripted series, was fighting for an audience in a completely oversaturated marketplace. It’s actually rare for a fourth season to be given to an original series that makes its home on a streaming platform. The digital space is littered with short-lived fare and Hulu is no exception. For example, the platform’s Difficult People and The Path also ended after season 3.

What Future Man Season 4’s Story Could’ve Been About

In the Future Man season 3 finale, the show’s heroes sealed the rip that made time travel possible, which killed that show’s premise. There’s not a lot of room for expansion into a season 4 from there. It’s possible Future Man season 4 could’ve explored the fish-out-of-water story of futuristic soldiers trying to get by in an ordinary world with their janitorial charge leading the way, but an epilogue established that wasn’t going to be the case. Ultimately, Future Man ended in a satisfying way.
