Kratos and Freya ended their relationship on bad terms in God of War, but that doesn’t mean it’ll remain that way in God of War Ragnarok. With the threats of Ragnarok approaching, Kratos and Atreus will need as many allies on their side as possible if they’re going to overcome the odds. God of War Ragnarok’s reveal trailer confirmed Tyr’s presence in the game, which is a major help to Kratos and Atreus, but Freya could be the one person that tips the balance for either side.

In God of War, Freya was a key figure that helped Kratos and Atreus along their journey to deliver Faye’s ashes to the highest peak in Jotunheim. Although she never accompanied them physically, she gave them important information about the imbalances in the Nine Realms and how to traverse the problems they faced; additionally, she saved Atreus’ life during a crucial moment in the narrative. At some points, it even seemed that Kratos and Freya might have developed deeper feelings for one another. However, a major shift between the two occurred after Kratos and Atreus found out they’d have to kill her son Baldur, resulting in an end-game boss battle that included Freya. After Baldur’s defeat, she turned against Kratos, causing many to believe Freya and Odin will work together in Ragnarok. That might not necessarily be the case though, and other evidence points towards the two reuniting again.

Whether or not Kratos and Freya make up during God of War Ragnarok’s story is more of an open-ended question that probably won’t be confirmed until players dive in after launch. In the current atmosphere, it looks like they won’t make up, but a statement by Mimir after Baldur’s death might turn out to be prophetic. With Ragnarok coming and Hela probably leading the charge, Freya will have to make a choice to either reunite with Kratos and save Midgard or continue fighting him and lose everything left she holds dear.

Why Freya Might Not Make Up With Kratos In God of War Ragnarok

Thinking that Freya and Kratos won’t be working together in God of War Ragnarok is a reasonable conclusion, and there’s some clear evidence that supports the idea. One of the biggest is due to Freya making it known that she wanted revenge on Kratos, saying “I will rain down every agony, every violation imaginable, upon you,” after he killed Baldur. After that declaration, it felt like God of War’s real villain was Freya because it showcased the malice she’d built up over the years of isolation. Mimir also added some context to the conversation by mentioning that Kratos and Atreus had killed her only son, which was something only a parent could understand. In that case, Freya might very well never forgive them and continue her crusade to kill them, or at least Kratos, in God of War Ragnarok.

Santa Monica’s recent reveal trailer also supports the idea that Freya and Kratos won’t make up. There’s a scene that shows Kratos and Atreus riding on a sled that’s being pulled by huskies; Freya shows up and lunges at them with the intent to fight Kratos. Based on that scene alone, it’s at least confirmed that Freya’s and Kratos’ relationship won’t be entirely healed throughout some parts of the game. If Freya does end up forgiving Kratos, it’ll likely take place later in the storyline. God of War Ragnarok’s trailer reveals story moments that show Kratos and Atreus talking with past allies they met it God of War (2018), along with new ones like Tyr, but that’s not the case when it comes to Freya because they’re only shown battling each other.

Why Kratos & Freya Reuniting In God Of War Ragnarok Is Still A Possibility

Other evidence points to the possibility of Kratos and Freya making up and forgiving one another. It’s undeniably true that Kratos and Freya had a special connection throughout most of the events in God of War. Both being gods meant they could read each other’s moods, but it also had to do with their similar life experiences: Freya was locked in Midgard by Odin and lost her relationship with her only son; Kratos was forced to leave his past life after killing Zeus, his father, while also juggling his wife’s death internally. Although Kratos’ and Freya’s relationship never lived up to Kratos and Atreus’, which changed God of War fundamentally, it was still very powerful. During some moments, the two showed emotions that resembled deeper interest toward each other, but it wasn’t the right moment for Kratos. However, it’s not unreasonable to believe their deeper connection might manifest again in Ragnarok, leading to a period of forgiveness.

Another convincing factor that supports the two making up goes back to a statement Mimir made after Kratos and Atreus killed Baldur. On their way back to the Jotunheim portal he says, “Just give her time lads; she’ll come around.” At the surface level, his comment seems simplistic, like something he’d say to comfort Atreus, but Mimir is no simple person and doesn’t say things without intention; after all, he’s the smartest person in the world, according to God of War’s Norse mythology. Sony’s Santa Monica could have very well used this moment as an alluding point, indicating that an eventual reconciliation between Kratos and Freya will happen. If so, God of War Ragnarok will be full of twist-and-turn moments.

Freya has a very important role in God of War. Her powers can be the downfall of Kratos or exactly what he and Atreus need to defeat Ragnarok’s looming doom. She is a game-changer, and they’ll need her in the final end-game fight, along with Tyr and all their other allies, like Brok and Sindri. If Kratos and Freya can’t find reasons to forgive each other, it likely won’t be pretty. Kratos never wanted their relationship to be ruptured, but he had to kill her son. Yet Freya’s emotions were overtaken by her maternal instincts, leading her to despise Kratos and wish for his destruction. If Kratos is going to save all the Nine Realms, he needs Freya’s alliance. If not, Hela will start Ragnarok with her Hel-Walkers and destroy everything, leaving Kratos and Freya’s relationship more important to the outcome of God of War Ragrarok than it might at first seem.
