Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2might be heading down the Warp Pipe in a pair of overalls if the latest Mario rumors are to be believed. As a sequel to 2012’s movie, a whole host of big names from Disney franchises and the world of video games are set to make an appearance, but will that Italian (ex) plumber be part of the story – or, at least, receive a cameo?

With a movie that promises to be bigger and bolder than the first, Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 has John C.Reilly’s lumbering hero again teaming up with Sarah Silverman’s Vanellope and being unleashed onto the World Wide Web. A whole host of pop culture references are expected in the movie alongside some famous faces that every gamer will recognize.

First spotted by Nintenderos, the IMDb page for Wreck-It Ralph 2 lists famous Mario voice artist Charles Martinet as part of the cast. Martinet has been the official voice of Mario since 1990, which means he has played the character across a number of titles including Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Odyssey. Considering that Wreck-It Ralph 2 has managed to secure Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Ming-Na Wen as Mulan, and Idina Menzel as Elsa from Frozen among many other voices, the movie is a reunion of stars and their famous characters. If anyone was going to voice Mario, it makes sense that it be Martinet.

The first Wreck-It Ralph featured Mario’s mushrooms and famously included Mario’s nemesis Bowser in the villain’s reform group. Mario clearly exists in the world of Wreck-It Ralph even if the man himself failed to make an appearance. Other video game legends like Street Fighter‘s Zangief, the bartender from Root Beer Tapper, and Sonic the Hedgehog had minor parts. Illumination has teamed with Nintendo to bring Mario back to theaters in his own standalone movie, meaning that the rights might get a little tricky for Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Disney, but let’s remember how the likes of Sony and the MCU have managed to share Spider-Man.

Director Rich Moore previously promised Mario for Wreck-It Ralph 2, saying he had “something good for Mario to do” in the sequel. Either way, the latest Wreck-It Ralph 2 trailer was still Mario-free and failed to clear up the rumors despite showing off the likes of Eeyore, Star Wars’ stormtroopers, and a whole host of Disney princesses. Considering IMDb can be edited, it’s not known for sure whether he’ll lend his voice to the sequel. Screen Rant has reached out to Martinet’s agent to find out more.
