Mega Evolution was introduced to the Pokémon series during Pokémon X and Y. This form of temporary evolution is an enhanced ability gained when a trainer has a special bond with a capable Pokémon. Mega Evolution would go on to be included in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as well as Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!. Because Mega Evolution has been a part of both the Hoenn and Kanto remakes in recent years, there is a chance that the special evolutionary forms will make a reappearance in the upcoming remakes for Sinnoh, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Mega Evolution had a mixed reception when it first launched in Pokémon X and Y, with fans unsure how to feel about the new take on evolution in the Pokémon series. However, the special ability gave older designs a fresh look and added a new way for players to tackle challenges in battles, and strategize with their Pokémon. While the ability to Mega Evolve was removed from games like Sun and Moon and Sword and Shield, it helped paved the way for abilities like Z-Moves, Dynamax, and Gigantamax.

There is currently speculation that players will potentially see the return of Mega Evolution in the upcoming Diamond and Pearl remakes. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are anticipated to drop late this year, and players are already seeing some of the marketing that will promote these remakes. According to Pokéshopper on Twitter, players can expect to see official promotional figures of Mega Lucario and Mega Charizard X available to purchase in the future. The use of Mega Evolution in promotional items for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl suggests developers are going to be including the mechanic in the remakes.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl May Include Mega Evolution

If Mega Evolution does make its way into Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, players can expect to see old favorites like Mega Charizard X or Y, as well as Mega Gyarados or Mega Gengar. There will also likely be new Megas added to the list, potentially from both the 7th and 8th generations of Pokémon, which weren’t available as options when Mega Evolution was first introduced. A Mega Alcremie as a powerful Fairy-type would be an excellent addition to the team, or potentially a Mega Lycanroc, whose coloration and ability change based on the time of day. There are plenty of new species that would make for effective Mega Evolution options.

While nothing has been confirmed by developers on whether or not players will be seeing the return of Mega Evolution or the inclusion of other battle mechanics like Dynamaxing, there is still plenty of time before Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl release for more information to be revealed. In the meantime, players wanting to refresh their Mega Evolution battle tactics may want to pull out their copies of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire or X and Y and brush up while they wait for more news on what the Pokémon series has in store for the upcoming Sinnoh remakes.
