WARNING: Spoilers ahead for And Just Like That‘s season 1 finale.

While Samantha Jones didn’t appear in And Just Like That season 1, the finale hinted she could come back for season 2. HBO Max’s And Just Like That, labeled the “next chapter” of Sex and the City, brought back three of the original series’ main characters. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) all reprised their Sex and the City roles, with one notable absence for And Just Like That season 1: Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones.

The supportive, loyal, humorous, and confident Samantha Jones was a staple of Sex and the City’s original series, so Kim Cattrall’s stance that she would not be returning for And Just Like That worried many long-time fans. Samantha’s absence was the first point of conversation in And Just Like That episode 1, with the show even mocking theories about Samantha being killed off. Rather, And Just Like That revealed that Samantha had actually moved to London after a significant fight with Carrie, which became a point of controversy among viewers considering circumstances didn’t sound like Samantha. Although Kim Cattrall’s character didn’t physically cameo in And Just Like That season 1, she was still a recurring presence through her text messages with Carrie.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The season 1 finale of And Just Like That saw Carrie traveling solo to Paris to scatter Big’s ashes on “their bridge,” which opened up the opportunity for Carrie and Samantha to reunite for drinks in London. Finally ending their (pointless) feud, Carrie and Samantha get drinks together in an off-screen reunion, thus setting up the four women to be back on good terms in season 2. Even if And Just Like That didn’t mean to imply that Samantha would be returning, the resolved fight between the characters suggested so, especially since the entire point of Samantha leaving was because of the feud. And Just Like That has had a problem with letting go of Samantha’s legacy, and her continued inclusion feels utterly fruitless if she isn’t returning for And Just Like That season 2. However, it seems the situation will be just that, as Kim Cattrall reprising her role is extremely unlikely.

Although And Just Like That season 2 isn’t officially confirmed, the returning Sex and the City cast have hinted at the show’s future. That said, there are still two major fan-favorite characters from Sex and the City who have yet to appear: Samantha, and Carrie’s ex-boyfriend Aidan. While it’s still possible for Aidan to come back, the chances of a Kim Cattrall cameo seem close to zero. Sex and the City now seems to just be part of Cattrall’s past, especially since she now has a significant role in Hulu’s How I Met Your Father series, a spinoff of How I Met Your Mother. While Cattrall hasn’t made a public announcement about her feelings on Sex and the City’s revival, she has liked a few tweets discussing her choice to not return, including one from juliachowhaws that reads: “So proud of @KimCattrall for skipping the trashy S&TC reboot and doing @HIMYFonHulu.”

And Just Like That showrunner Michael Patrick King told Variety that he has ruled out Kim Cattrall returning to SATC based on her previous comments, which makes it all the more curious as to why Samantha Jones continues to be written into the series. When asked if the door was open for Cattrall to return, King’s answer was an immediate “no,” largely because of Cattrall’s previous comments. It seems Samantha’s role in And Just Like That season 2 will repeat her presence in season 2, which mostly amounts to texting or the internet. The only realistic opportunity for a Samantha Jones appearance in And Just Like Thatseason 2 would be if the character was recast, and that’s a significant risk the revival isn’t apt to take.
