Netflix has decided not to move forward with The Rain season 4 – but fans may still be hoping for a revival and continuation of the story. The Danish sci-fi series originally premiered in May 2018, and follows two Scandinavian siblings who attempt to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The Rain season 2 debuted in May 2019, and the third installment arrived on Netflix in August 2020.

At the start of The Rain, Simone Andersen (Alba August) and her brother Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) spend six years underground while hiding from a rain that infects and kills human beings, along with all other forms of life. The siblings later re-emerge and look for their missing father, only to learn that a company named Apollon is actually responsible for the outbreak. As the series progresses, one of the main protagonists becomes a villain, which is the premise for The Rain season 3.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Like so many Netflix series that don’t receive huge critical acclaim, The Rain has seemingly survived because streamers enjoy the overall experience. The initial season consists of just eight episodes, while the second and third installments equal 12 episodes in total. The Rain can be easily binged, which is ideal for locked-down Netflix subscribers, but unfortunately those 20 episodes are all we’ll get.

Netflix Didn’t Renew The Rain For Season 4

Netflix made two big decisions about The Rain season 3 in June 2019. The streaming service ordered a third installment, but also announced that it would be the last. The silver lining is that The Rain season 3 was written and produced with a clear end in sight, which allows for proper closure instead of a cryptic conclusion or a cliffhanger. The Rain season 3 does indeed end wrap up its story in the final episode.

How The Rain Season 4 Could Still Happen

The Rain season 3 kills off several main characters, but one of the surviving protagonists could lead a fourth installment at a new platform. As of now, it doesn’t appear that any of the cast members or filmmakers have acknowledged the possibility of a fourth season, and there haven’t been any major #SaveTheRain campaigns on social media. Given that Netflix chose to not move forward with more episodes, it seems that the streaming numbers just weren’t ideal. However, The Rain still has potential to be revived elsewhere.

What The Rain Season 4 Storyline Would Be About

In theory, The Rain season 4 would focus on Simone’s evolution into a true leader. She’s a motherly figure during the entirety of the first three seasons, primarily because she was tasked with looking after her younger brother, who repeatedly demonstrates that he needs guidance. As previously mentioned, The Rain season 3 kills off multiple main characters, which suggests that Simone will naturally become the main narrative focus, even if she’s not the prototypical hardened warrior of so many post-apocalyptic productions.

If The Rain season 4 does by some chance happen, expect it to draw some influence from the current COVID-19 epidemic and the issues surrounding it, if only to reinforce Simone’s humanity. After all, many viewers will surely be curious about how she’ll navigate the world moving forward, especially after losing a loved one.
