Willem Defoe teases Norman Osborn’s current state and his arsenal of weaponry in Spider-Man: No Way Home during a recent panel at CCXP Worlds. Defoe reprises his role of the Green Goblin almost 20 years after his debut in 2002’s Spider-Man. Defoe joins Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, who will join forces to face off against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, when the film premieres on December 15th.

As a result of Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) botched spell to make the world forget Peter Parker’s (Holland) identity, the barriers of the multiverse are weakened, allowing villains from alternate realities to pass into the main MCU universe. The opening allows villains from previous Spider-Man movies to return, with Foxx’s Electro and Rhys Ifans’ Lizard of  Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man duology, along with Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman, and Defoe’s Green Goblin of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. With Defoe’s return finally being officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, the star has teased the Goblin’s new arsenal in the upcoming movie.

Joining Molina and Foxx for a villain-centric panel during CCXP Worlds, later uploaded to the official Spider-Man YouTube channel, Defoe touched on how the Green Goblin differed from Raimi’s film. Doing his best to avoid spoilers, Defoe stated that the Goblin would be different, with Norman and the Goblin being further down the line than they were in Raimi’s original film. Defoe then suggested that the Green Goblin has a few new tricks up his sleeve, with the suit having received a few upgrades since his last appearance. Check out Defoe’s full response below.

“I don’t know how much we want to fool with spoilers, but… that looks a little different, Norman and the Goblin have- are further down the line, and they have a few more tricks up their sleeve. So, it’s not an exact, um, there have been upgrades on the costume, let’s say.”

Fans quickly noticed Norman’s new outfit as soon as the villain appeared in promotional material. Alongside the iconic armored jumpsuit seen in Raimi’s movies, fans quickly noticed a hooded figure riding a Goblin glider who they theorized to be James Franco’s Harry Osborn, though higher-definition footage soon debunked this. The hooded figure was revealed to be Defoe, now wearing a pair of goggles and hooded cloak over his older costume, with the film’s official poster offering a better glimpse at the new outfit.

Though much of Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s plot is unknown, Holland is set to face villains experienced with fighting their own respective Spider-Men. As such, each villain has their own tactics and traits Holland’s Peter will have to quickly get used to as he fights for his life. However, with the MCU having its own unique technological advancements to offer through Wakanda, Stark Industries, and the numerous alien technologies leftover from repeated invasions, Norman and his fellow villains have plenty of opportunities to upgrade themselves.
