Warning! Spoilers ahead for Wolverine: Black, White, and Blood #4

Due to his healing power Wolverine is a mutant that has a hard time dying, but in the pages of Wolverine: Black, White, and Blood he just described the absolute worst way he could die—and it is horrifying. It’s not exactly easy for Logan to die, but there are a few times that he has died in the comics in the past. In House of X #4 Wolverine jumped into the sun in order to save the day, and in Death of Wolverine he was suffocated by an adamantium casing. Both of these sound like a piece of cake compared to the horrific death scenario that he recently described in detail.

Of course there are a lot of ways that someone can die, even those with mutant abilities, and in this case that is exactly what makes this imagined death so much worse for Logan. While his healing factor has gotten him out of many possible deaths before, including the time he survived the nuclear bombings of Japan and even the moment when his adamantium skeleton was literally ripped out of him by Magneto, it is what will do him in if this fear of his comes true.

After being shot almost to death in Wolverine: Black, White, and Blood #4, which is written by Kelly Thompson and has art by Khary Randolph, Wolverine battles with a herd of Great White sharks. As he does his best to take them out, his mind wanders to the horrible fate that could befall him if he doesn’t come out on top. He might not have to worry about dying from blood loss, but he does have to be concerned about passing out from losing too much blood. If this happens, then Wolverine would sink to the bottom of the ocean thanks to his extremely heavy adamantium skeleton. There he would drown, and because of his healing factor, Wolverine would heal—but just long enough for him to drown all over again. So on, and so forth, continuing on for all of eternity as he is stuck in a horrifying cycle. All because of his mutant abilities—and it doesn’t sound too appealing.

Luckily for Wolverine he is able to fight back against the sharks enough to get himself on a boat and out of the water before he loses too much blood, so there is no need for him to worry more about that horrifying death cycle. Readers will likely picture this happening to him every time he enters a body of water from now on though, especially since it is one of those images that is near impossible to get out of your head.

With a healing factor and an adamantium skeleton, it could be assumed that not much would keep Wolverine down for eternity. But now readers know exactly what can do him in for good: a vicious cycle of drowning that would have him living a fate worse than death, as he is forced to drown over and over again. It stands to reason that eventually his brain would become inoperable even with his body healing, and he would finally die for good, or at least remain brain dead so that he doesn’t have to feel himself drowning over and over. Wolverine: Black, White, and Blood #4 is available at your local comic store and online now.
