Warning: contains preview images for Wolverine: Patch #1!

In the forthcoming Wolverine: Patch series from Marvel, Logan will resurrect his infamous “Patch” persona. The new five-issue miniseries will see legendary Wolverine scribe Larry Hama return to the character in a brand-new story that serves as a prequel to his fan favorite run. The first issue, on sale in print and digital this March, will be illustrated by Andrea Di Vito, with covers by Geoff Shaw, Dan Jurgens, Skottie Young and John Romita Jr.

Throughout his long life, Wolverine has had many identities and aliases: James Howlett, Logan, Weapon X and Patch, to name a few. In 1988, Marvel awarded Wolverine his own ongoing series and in the first issue, he relocated to the island nation of Madripoor. There, in an effort to blend in with the locals, Wolverine put on an eyepatch and began referring to himself as “Patch.” No one ever seemed to see through Wolverine’s “disguise” and the people of Madripoor welcomed him with open arms. Legendary writer Larry Hama took over writing duties on issue 31 of the series and would guide Logan’s adventures for the next several years, becoming synonymous with the character. Hama’s run is fondly remembered by fans, and Hama had a chance to return to that era in a recent issue of X-Men Legends. Now, Hama unites with artist Andrea Di Vito to tell another new story, set during a classic era in Wolverine: Patch #1.

Marvel’s March solicitations reveal the new series, which will be set shortly before Hama began his run on the title. Wolverine, going by “Patch,” has made a name for himself on Madripoor, and now he and his friend Archie are about to embark on a recon mission, one that quickly goes south, turning into a full-fledged paramilitary operation. Secrets will come to light in the miniseries, which will also feature an appearance from another famous eye-patch wearer: Nick Fury. The series promises to be fun for not only fans of Hama’s classic Wolverine run, but new fans as well. Wolverine’s “Patch” persona ranks as one of the more interesting chapters in the character’s history, coming at a time when the X-Men were believed dead by the larger world. Wolverine needed the means to lay low during this period, and “Patch” provided the perfect way to do so. Larry Hama helped oversee the character’s adventures during this time, a run so popular Marvel has returned not once, but twice to it—starting with X-Men Legends and now Wolverine: Patch.

The solicitation makes it clear secrets from the past will come to light—will they affect Wolverine in the present day? And what role does Nick Fury play in this story? Readers will have to find out when Wolverine: Patch hits the comic book store shelves this March.
