Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Wonder Woman 1984.

Steve’s wish from the first Wonder Woman film was ultimately granted in Wonder Woman 1984. Despite dying in the 2017 film, Diana Prince’s love interest returned in the sequel, reuniting the couple. While they ultimately had to part ways again, it was still worth it to see them back together, potentially for the last time.

Following the death of Steve during her first mission, Diana slowly lost everyone else in her life who knew about her real identity. As established early in Wonder Woman 1984, the Amazonian Goddess was living a life of a social recluse, not wanting to develop any personal attachments considering that she knew she’d either come clean to them about the truth about her superhero persona or deal with the pain of losing all of them again as they age while she basically stays the same. This repressed loneliness exacerbated her longing for Steve, leading Diana to wish for his return to the Dreamstone — not knowing that it actually has the ability to make it come true, albeit with some caveats.

So, Steve came back, although in a different body; this didn’t dampen Diana’s elation over his return. At this point in Wonder Woman 1984, both were still clueless as to what brought him back, but once the initial rush of happiness and excitement died down, they decided to get to the bottom of the mystery until they learned that as an exchange for granting her wish, the Dreamstone was sucking all of Diana’s powers, slowly making it difficult for her to stop Maxwell Lord and Cheetah from nefarious plans. The only way to stop the process was for Diana to renounce her wish, which she understandably refused to do — until she came to the realization that it’s what’s needed to be done. In the end, they decided to part ways; what made their separation in Wonder Woman 1984 so much worse is that Diana had to willingly let go of Steve. Despite another tragic break-up, Steve’s return granted his most fervent wish in Wonder Woman.

In the pair’s rushed final encounter in the 2017 film, Steve explained to Diana his plan that involved sacrificing himself for the greater good. She tried stopping him, but he insisted that it had to be him because while “I could save today, you could save the world.” Just before Steve handed her his prized watch, he told her that he wished they had more time which was something that they got in Wonder Woman 1984. Interestingly, Steve was in a unique situation in the sequel where he got his wish without the Dreamstone taking anything away from him in-exchange as it did with everyone else who directly sought its powers. Granted that it was just for a brief time (in someone else’s body) and he did eventually have to leave Diana again, but as he got exactly what he wanted which was more time.

No indication that Steve will return in the imminent Wonder Woman 3 considering that Wonder Woman 1984 doubled-down on the idea that he is dead, and if he comes back, it won’t be through the natural order of things. Still, his involvement in the sequel was a welcome development considering Chris Pine’s terrific chemistry with Gal Gadot. Narrative-wise, it also gives Diana the much-needed boost from Steve at a point in her life where she was feeling so down and alone.
