Wonder Woman 2: How Old Diana Prince Is In 1984

While theWonder Woman 1984 DC FanDome trailer revealed more about the hotly anticipated DCEU sequel, Diana Prince’s age has continued to mystify fans. In the latest trailer to the follow-up to 2017’s Wonder Woman, Steve Trevor remarks that Diana doesn’t seem to have aged at all, in spite of the fact that 1984 takes place decades after the first film. What’s more, Diana also looks the same in the present day in films like Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, so how old is she, exactly?

The first Wonder Woman installment firmly established that Diana was different from Steve and the rest of mankind. Patty Jenkins’ sequel revealed that its titular heroine is from the Amazonian island of Themyscira. When Steve Trevor, an American World War I soldier, crashes on the island, Diana’s world is upended and she’s forced to reckon with the evils of the outside world for the first time. She eventually joins Steve on his journey into the world of men, and by the movie’s end, she has vowed to protect humanity, though she’s tragically lost Trevor.

Because Diana doesn’t seem to have aged, the question of whether Wonder Woman ever ages, or whether Diana simply ages very slowly is front and center again. Wonder Woman 1984 may address Diana’s age more explicitly alongside explaining why Steve Trevor is alive again, but it remains to be seen. While Wonder Woman 1984 may do more to answer the question of Diana’s age, it’s hardly the first time that fans have wondered how old she is. That question first came up around the release of Dawn of Justice, and Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins took steps then to explain why Gadot’s character doesn’t seem to age.

Gadot was the first to weigh in prior to the film’s release, offering the suggestion that Diana was about 5,000 years old. director Jenkins then agreed that Diana was much older than any human, but told Collider that she was probably just 800 years old around the time of the first Wonder Woman. This would mean that, in Wonder Woman 1984, which is one of the few blockbuster movies still releasing in 2020, Diana would be roughly 870. In the present day, then, she’s closer to 900. Interestingly, Jenkins, who is also directing the sequel, explained that Diana was still just a kid when she travels to the world of men for the first time. Although the question may seem like an insignificant one, Jenkins also said that she spent a lot of time trying to pin down her lead character’s exact age.

“Oh my God, have I had that conversation. Ad nauseam. Because the truth was I kept talking about listen, this is her coming of age story. How is she coming of age and how long does that take to learn these lessons. Well, it would take a long time but also we don’t know how long it took to get to that moment that she finally does the energy blast and then Steve arrives.“

As we learn in the first film, Diana is actually the daughter of Zeus, which may mean that she is essentially immortal. If she isn’t, then she definitely ages very slowly, which explains why her physical appearance hasn’t changed at all in spite of the different time periods in which we’ve already seen her save the world. Ares, her half brother, who was played by David Thewlis, was older than Diana in Wonder Woman, suggesting that their shared genetics don’t entirely stop aging. And if she follows in her brother’s footsteps, she will continue to age at a very slow rate, explaining why she’s barely changed in Wonder Woman 1984.
