The action-adventure game Wonder Woman was announced at The Game Awards 2021, and this title will very likely feature the Nemesis System that Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment patented earlier this year. The Nemesis System was created by Monolith Productions for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its 2017 sequel Shadow of War, and while it was largely well-received it hasn’t been seen since. After Wonder Woman‘s reveal trailer, Monolith’s Studio Head implied that Wonder Woman will have its own Nemesis System that further raises the bar.

The Nemesis System in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was a complex, procedurally-generated web of relationships between orc leaders and minions, each with their own unique personalities. When the player character in Middle-earth died or moved to a different location, enemy orcs repopulated camps and promoted units. They remembered each battle with the player in addition to vying with each other for power, and the player could even make them become allies.

Wonder Woman‘s mechanics won’t be exactly the same, but there are lots of possibilities for what its version of the Nemesis System could employ. Before Middle-earth, the System was supposedly being built for a Batman game, based around Batman using Joker gas to control enemies. This could be retooled using Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth, which forces individuals trapped by it to follow the wielder’s commands. While Wonder Woman isn’t opposed to killing, using non-lethal blows to defeat enemies could be an alternative way for players to order new minions around.

How The Wonder Woman Game Could Use WB’s Patented Nemesis System

Middle-earth‘s protagonist had a tendency of dying and resurrecting; orcs would remember defeating the player and got promoted for their success, growing more powerful. Wonder Woman might not straddle the line between life and death quite as much, considering that Diana is one of the most powerful characters in the DC Universe. Against her, it’s hard to say what situation an enemy could emerge “victorious” in to receive a promotion. She has god-like reflexes and strength, but her body is still human enough to be afflicted by poison and damaged by bullets or other weapons. While she wouldn’t die, she could be ushered away from the battlefield to recover her injuries perhaps. If properly equipped by a Wonder Woman villain appearing in the game, maybe lesser enemies could gain the potential to present an actual threat or challenge to the mighty Diana.

Warner Bros.’ Nemesis System patent will be in effect until at least 2035, but it is heartening that its studio Monolith Productions will feature it again in Wonder Woman. Diana herself will also be playable in Warner Bros.’ upcoming MultiVersus. This free-to-play game will be available on all platforms, but the Wonder Woman game hasn’t had its platform announced yet. Few details have been revealed so far, but the return of the innovative System alone makes Wonder Woman a game that fans of Middle-earth will want to keep an eye on.
