Warning! Spoilers ahead for Wonder Woman: Evolution #4!

Every superhero team has arguments, even SupermanBatman, and Wonder Woman on the Justice League—debatably the most structured comic book team of them all. Stephanie Nicole Phillips and Mike Hawthorne’s Wonder Woman: Evolution #4 portrays a clash within the Justice League. When the heroes detain an alleged terrorist from the planet of Xarr, Wonder Woman argues the League should defend the refugee. Meanwhile, Batman suggests that justice belongs to her people.

So far in Wonder Woman: Evolution, Diana seems to be traveling through a state of fabricated realities. She doesn’t know if the Justice League she’s witnessing is the real one, but everyone on the Justice League seems to be accurate. The captured Xarrian may have something to do with an answer to the alternate realities, so this could be another reason why Wonder Woman wants to defend her.

When Diana arrives at the Hall of Justice, members of the Justice League have already agreed to bring the Xarrian to her homeworld, leading to the alien’s potential assassination. Batman seems to be the most in favor of this, claiming their priority is to defend Earth. Superman is still the most on the fence, claiming he doesn’t like it, but it would be ideal for the people of Earth not to take casualties. Wonder Woman’s only request is to hear the Xarrian, claiming it’s the Justice League’s responsibility to protect all life, not just those who come from Earth. When the Xarrian admits she’s labeled a “terrorist” according to the corrupt government she protests, Diana makes up her mind.

Batman retorts to Diana’s insistent defense of the Xarrian while Superman hears her out and tries to level with her. Wonder Woman doesn’t want to hear anything about returning the Xarrian to her homeworld, swearing she will resolve this without any death at all. The issue ends with Diana fighting her teammates. It isn’t the first time Batman and Wonder Woman’s disagreement has led to a clash of superheroes. Longtime DC fans know that Diana and Bruce clash in Mark Waid and Alex Ross’ Kingdom Come, where Superman stands as the mediator between his companions. Nevertheless, Superman isn’t always there. During the final battle, it takes all of Batman’s energy to reach Wonder Woman and convince her to stop fighting.

While Superman may have the most commendable thought process—keeping the peace among his fractured team—he stalls to consider every possible option before acting. However, sometimes the Justice League is forced to make a decision. In Wonder Woman: Evolution, it’s going to have to be Batman’s way or Wonder Woman’s way. Batman may have been right in Kingdom Come, but this time Diana will have to fight her way through, proving she has a clearer sense of justice.

It’s regular for Wonder Woman and Batman’s stubborn ideologies to lead to friction within the Justice League. Nonetheless, when it comes to the Xarrian refugee, Wonder Woman’s argument is what the entire Justice League is all about. Wonder Woman knows Superman, of all characters, understands. Because these events could merely be in Diana’s imagination, the Justice League in Wonder Woman: Evolution #4 is likely the idea of these characters according to Wonder Woman. The characterizations of Batman and Superman are definitely in line with Diana’s opinions of the two.
