Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta, is generally known for being queen of the Amazons – and a rather good one at that – though she is far from perfect. Wonder Woman #776 reveals that she is also responsible for hiding dark secrets. Diana may be the Goddess of Truth, but her mother wasn’t always the best role model for her in this regard.

Young Diana’s story within the current ongoing run of Wonder Woman has explored a mystery that is missing from the history of the Amazons. Diana was able to locate the missing text of history and discovered the secret past. However, not all of the secrets of the Amazons’ history have been revealed just yet.

Created by the team of Jordie Bellaire, Paulina Ganucheau, Kendall Goode, and Becca Carey, Wonder Woman #776 finally reveals who hid the history of the Amazons. This issue shows how the texts came to be cursed – Hellene was ordered to destroy them and while she was doing so, Circe intervened and took them, while Hellene denied all knowledge of them. This is how they came to be erased. However, the conclusion of the issue reveals the shocking truth about who gave the order to begin with: Hippolyta.

The secret history that Diana recovered told the story of a boy who was brave and kind. He was a warrior, but he ultimately came to be against war. This led to him being killed by his fellow warriors while surrendering. This story moves Diana, because this boy sounds similar to the Amazons as she knows them. She doesn’t understand why this story would be deemed necessary to remove from their history. It is different from every tale of man she has heard, which is likely exactly why Hippolyta decided it needed to be hidden.

The history of the Amazons is often tied to the greed and perversion of men. Different versions refer to the horrors that these warriors faced under ancient heroes like Hercules. From humiliation to imprisonment, the Amazons often suffered by men’s hand. They live on an island separate from the world of men for a reason, after all. It seems natural that Hippolyta would want all the stories of their history to be the same, to prevent her daughter from being curious about the world of man and to prevent her from ever caring about them – or even just one. If this is the case, it would make sense since Diana usually ultimately leaves Themyscira because of the arrival of Steve Trevor. Hippolyta is likely trying to prevent this fate from befalling her daughter. However, this means that one of the biggest virtues that Wonder Woman was taught growing up is severely compromised.

Thus far, this story has heavily relied upon the themes of honesty, secrecy, and how they impact ruling a group of people. Wonder Woman is the Goddess of Truth, wielding the Lasso of Truth. This makes it extra ironic that her youth involves being lied to for a long time by her own mother. However, it could also explain why Wonder Woman strives towards discovering and revealing the truth so strongly. She sees the broader picture and is able to accept the positive with the negative – she is able to see balance and overcome fear in a way that right now, her mother doesn’t seem to be able to. The next issue will likely reveal the full reasoning of why Hippolyta, Queen of Themyscira, felt the need to hide one of the Amazons’ darkest secrets – which likely means that the story Wonder Woman found hasn’t even reached its darkest point.
