A custom system by a veteran Dungeons and Dragons book writer combines the classic tabletop game with World of Warcraft into a single epic crossover experience. Wyatt Trull is back to work on his “Blood & Thunder” guide after fans continuously requested he continue the series, to bring WoW’s universe into D&D‘s mechanics.

It isn’t the first time that the Warcraft franchise has crossed paths with Dungeons & Dragons, as several developers who made names for themselves at Blizzard have transitioned into creating campaigns of their own in D&DBut very few writers have actually directly translated WoW lore into the D&D universe and utilized the latter’s mechanics. While from a story perspective, the two franchises share quite a bit in common, as far as gameplay is concerned, they’re extremely different. WoW, a video game marked by its colorful and fantastical visuals, is considerably more quirky and outlandish, whereas D&D, a tabletop RPG with much darker tones, both in terms of graphics and stories, tends to be more serious and reserved. So crossovers between the two are a lot less common than one would initially expect.

Trull already made a name for himself as a prolific and self-professed WoW and D&D nerd who has self-published over fifty guide books for the latter franchise over the course of his career. As PCGamesN reported, he first introduced “Blood & Thunder” on Reddit last year after tinkering with it since 2015, starting off with stats for the Furbolg, but went on hiatus in order to focus more on supporting himself as a writer. After a number of requests from fans to resume the series, he picked it back up again in February of this year, posting more species stats weekly on his Instagram and Patreon. Each week, he’ll post new races to both platforms, with patrons on his Patreon voting to choose the next.

But stats are only one piece of the puzzle. Trull is aware of how the idiosyncrasies of WoW don’t quite work with the mechanics of Dungeons & DragonsHe’s written a full campaign, “The Culling of Stratholme,” that he’s playtested through along with a second campaign test set during the Dark Iron invasion of Grim Batol. So hardcore D&D players can rest assured that the stats are more than a novelty, and are actually a workable, and entertaining, setup.

Since Trull writes for a living, it’s highly encouraged to go sign up for his Patreon, especially since he’s previously had to pause this particular endeavor to focus on his financial responsibilities. Anyone who’s ever written for a living (cough) can attest to how difficult it can be to balance personal projects with the cost of living, and any fans of Trull’s “Blood & Thunder” guide with cash to spare can help keep Trull’s creative momentum going, at least until the end of the campaign. Regardless, this new campaign should be another way for World of Warcraft players to express their fandom outside the game.
