The World of Warcraft: Shadowlands release date has been officially confirmed for October 27, 2020, as announced by Blizzard following an animated short from the developer that aired during Gamescom 2020 Opening Night Live. World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is the next in a long line of the MMORPG’s expansions, and is set to follow the heroes of Azeroth as they explore the world of the titular Shadowlands, the realm of the dead that becomes accessible thanks to the meddling of Sylvanas Windrunner.

Fans already knew the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands release date was coming, but just when it would be available remained very much up in the air. Blizzard has previously gone on record as saying that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands would make its fall 2020 release date window, but had yet to actually assign a calendar date to it – or even provide an indication of whether it would be early or late fall. What fans do know, however, is what they’ve seen during the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands beta, an experience that had those who played it coming away positive on the franchise’s future and it’s handling of some of its more ambitious updates this expansion.

Now, however, aspiring warriors of Azeroth and veterans alike know exactly when to clear their schedule – the long-awaited World of Warcraft: Shadowlands release date has been confirmed as October 27, 2020. The announcement came alongside a reveal of Shadowlands Afterlives, the animated series that will detail each of the major zones of the expansion and provide backstory on how they functioned prior to the interference of Sylvanas. The game’s official release date announcement trailer also provided a bit more insight into what it will look like:

A World of Warcraft: Shadowlands release date right before Halloween seems perfectly-timed given the expansion’s grim content, and will come at a time when many consumers are planning out their holiday purchases, which should help inflate the interest in the upcoming expansion. Of course, a lot of what’s coming in Shadowlands has MMORPG fans extremely intrigued – not the least of which is the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands level squish – and the success of World of Warcraft Classic has also piqued interest from some lapsed veterans who may check out what the current retail experience looks like on release.

With a game as huge and long-lived as World of Warcraft, any details about what its future looks like will be eagerly devoured by interested fans. The most important thing, however, is always the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands release date – and now that it’s been confirmed, and crucially won’t be delayed, current players can begin planning how best to dive into the realm of the dead later this year.
