Frostmourne is one of the most iconic and storied weapons in all of World of Warcraft. The history of this famous sword can be traced throughout several major WoW titles, including Wrath of the Lich King and Legion. However, it’s also been featured in Warcraft III and other ancillary Warcraft media over the years. Here’s everything fans should known about the legendary sword, Frostmourne.

Frostmourne’s history actually begins in Torghast, with the Jailer having it crafted with power from the Maw. In this way it has close connections to the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands. However, Frostmourne was carried by the Lich King, Ner’zhul, during the events of Warcraft III. In fact, Frostmourne’s legacy has mostly been tied to numerous Lich Kings in Warcraft‘s history – most notably, with Arthas Menethil.

Once Ner’zhul was defeated, Frostmourne was discovered by Arthas Menethil. Tempted by the power of Frostmourne, Arthas took the sword and became the new Lich King. This was one of the greatest tragedies in Warcraft, and it had ramifications that continue even now. As the new Lich King, Arthas used Frostmourne to commit many atrocities against his own people. Now, over a decade after Wrath of the Lich King released, Frostmourne is most closely tied to Arthas Menethil.

What Happened To Frostmourne After Arthas In WoW

Once Arthas was defeated in WoW: Wrath of the Lich King by Tirion Fordring, Frostmourne was shattered. The souls trapped inside were freed, and the shards were presumably put away for safekeeping (although it’s never explicitly said who had them). Frostmourne’s hilt was eventually placed at a statue erected in honor of Tirion Fordring. In Legion, however, the shards were reforged into two new powerful runeblades: Icebringer and Frostreaper. These swords became known as the Blades of the Fallen Prince, alluding to Arthas Menethil’s fall from grace.

Due to Sylvanas’ plans in Shadowlands, it’s possible that fans haven’t seen the last of Frostmourne. The sword is one of the most iconic weapons in World of Warcraft, and it’s played a pivotal role in some of WoW‘s best storytelling moments. With Shadowlands‘ endgame concerning Torghast, the Maw, and the Jailer, it’s always possible Frostmourne will be completely reforged or that a new version of it will be created. For now, though, Frostmourne’s legacy rests within Icebringer and Frostreaper.

Although Frostmourne first belonged to Ner-zhul the Lich King, it’s most famously associated with Arthas Menethil and his turning into a new Lich King after Ner-zhul’s defeat. Frostmourne’s history in World of Warcraft is important, and it’s arguably the most iconic weapon in the entire franchise. Perhaps the sword will even resurface in future WoW content.
