With only one month to go until WWE 2K Battlegrounds makes its debut, it’s high time for the reveal of all the various game modes coming to the arcadey title, and who better to do the honors than WWE advocate and mad genius Paul Heyman? Subbing in for the usual yearly WWE 2K title, WWE 2K Battlegrounds will star wrestlers from yesterday and today in over the top squared circle brawls. As unbelievable as some of the WWE Superstars can be inside the ring in real life, the gameplay already on display for this arcadey fighting game from Mad Dog Games blows them out of the water.

Over fifty different wrestlers have already been confirmed for the game as well, giving players plenty of variety in who they wish to use to layeth the smacketh down. Speaking of The Great One, The Rock and his eternal rival Stone Cold Steve Austin are in the Legends roster alongside names like Yokozuna, Sgt. Slaughter, John Cena, and The Undertaker. Stars from today go all the way from future Hall of Famers like AJ Styles and Seth Rollins to rising stars like Kalisto, Ricochet, and Akira Tozawa. Of course, the women’s roster is also packed with the entire Four Horsewomen, The Goddess Alexa Bliss, and Asuka.

In a peculiar story time-style segment posted on WWE 2K’s YouTube page, Paul Heyman goes through all the various modes that players can partake in once WWE 2K Battlegrounds launches on September 18. The one Heyman is most involved in is the Campaign mode, where he and Steve Austin appear as characters helping players travel around the globe looking for new superstars. Finding game-exclusive characters like Bolo Reynolds and Jessica Johnson, winning matches also unlocks Superstars, power-ups, and items for the rest of the game.

If no-frills brawling is on the menu, WWE 2K Battlegrounds supports everything from Singles and Tag action to multi-man matchups, cage matches, and even the Royal Rumble. Players can battle in all these matches online or on the couch with up to four players. Taking the fight online gives players a chance to sample online tournaments when they’re activated. Players also have King of The Battleground mode, which is a gauntlet-style elimination mode with Royal Rumble rules. Finally, Battleground Challenge mode has players going through one hundred different scenarios with a created WWE competitor. Victory in the challenges unlocks even more cosmetic rewards and additional playable wrestlers.

While many fans of WWE are less than excited at what they’ve seen of WWE 2K Battlegrounds so far, one must admit that something new is certainly preferred over another main entry in the simulation-style series. Official WWE games have been in a rut for a long while, and WWE 2K20 was even more broken than usual. With the developers at Yukes now off the series, giving Visual Concepts and 2K Games time to come up with something refreshed for the wrestling experience is ideal. The fact that players get an arcade-style game to tide them over until the next main entry is just icing on the cake.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds will release on September 18, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC.
