Even with 2K Games adding the fan-favorite general manager game mode back into the series, WWE 2K22’s Universe mode is far superior. After being on hiatus following the controversial and disappointing release of WWE 2K20, 2K Games and Visual Concepts has brought back the wrestling series with the promises of new features, graphics, and improved gameplay mechanics. To add on, the title uses a rebuilt game engine that should make combat much more immersive and fluid than in previous installments.

Other modes in WWE 2K22, such as MyRISE, and MyFACTION, also make an appearance, adding something new to the series. MyRISE is similar to the past titles’ MyCareer mode, and MyFACTION is similar to the mobile game WWE Supercard, as players collect superstars in the form of cards and build a team of superstars. These two additions alone can make WWE 2K22 one of March’s most anticipated game releases.

WWE 2K22‘s My GM mode does a lot of good as it brings back the player experience of managing a brand alongside competing with other shows such as NXT or Smackdown. However, it does lack some of the features that are present in the game’s Universe mode. For example, in My GM, match cards for each show are shortened to only three instead of six. To go even further, the only title belt options that superstars can compete for are a men’s and women’s title.

WWE 2K22’s My GM Mode Is Lacking In Features

Another setback that the mode has is the inability to put together two highly popular superstars in a match as they can cause the show’s rating to drop, which feels contradictory to actual real-life WWE events. With WWE 2K22 trying to improve from past games, it feels as if it has taken a few steps back, as Universe mode can do the same exact tasks better. Not only does Universe comes back with several new improvements itself, but one of the main highlights is that players can exclusively play as a single superstar with the ability to focus only on their matches and storylines.

Universe mode essentially plays like My GM without the managing aspect, so if players want something with more free reign and variety that’s their best option. The mode also gives players more match cards and the ability to create their own matches however they please without suffering from the repercussions of a “bad match type”. Compared to Smackdown vs Raw 2006, WWE 2K22’s My GM mode is simplified this time around, which can be unfortunate as the complexity is what originally gave the mode its charm.

Players coming in with expectations of the older general manager mode may be greeted with disappointment in the near future. Even though Universe mode can be considered to be superior over My GM, that doesn’t mean that fun can’t be had managing a show to your liking. Regardless of the mode, many players’ creativity should be able to shine as they create several dream matches in WWE 2K22.
