The X-Men comics are giving Cyclops‘ daughter, Rachel Grey, a brand new costume. The daughter of Cyclops and Phoenix from an alternate timeline, Rachel Grey was the original Omega mutant – a psychic who inherited all of Jean Grey’s telepathic powers, and who has successfully contained the power of the Phoenix Force for years without going Dark Phoenix. She’s one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants, and she looks set to star in the upcoming Knights of X miniseries.

Rachel has served as an X-Man ever since she traveled back from her own future timeline to the present day – but unfortunately, she’s often struggled to come up with a decent costume. She’s most famous for wearing the uniform of a Hound, a disturbingly S&M design she originally wore when she was forced to serve as a Hound by mutant hunters; other famous looks have included a miniskirt that really didn’t work well with her telekinesis and a strange spiked jacket that would probably break a coathanger under its weight.

But now it seems Rachel Grey is getting a brand new look. She’s one of the X-Men set to appear in Tini Howard and Bob Quinn’s Knights of X, a series set in the mystical realm of Otherworld that will see a handful of X-Men battle to save a fantastical world that hates and fears them. Marvel has now given AIPT a look at the new costume Rachel will wear during this run – one perfectly suited to Otherworld. It appears on a variant cover of Knights of X #2 exclusively revealed to AIPT.

The new look is a stunning one, fitting well with the Arthurian style of Otherworld. It follows Rachel’s trademark scarlet color scheme, but the breastplate and gauntlets also feel like a homage to some costumes worn by Jean Grey, who Rachel has always considered her mother. Most interesting of all, the general aesthetic perfectly complements Betsy Braddock’s Captain Britain outfit; there have been hints of a potential queer romance between the two during Tini Howard’s Excalibur run, and it’s entirely possible the subtext will finally become overt.

Former X-Men lead writer Jonathan Hickman recently explained how difficult it is to explore queer concepts in the X-Men books. “Obviously we serve a lot of masters,” he noted. “We serve Disney, and Marvel, and we have our own editorial group, and we have our own proofreaders group. I like to think that we push it as far as we possibly can.” Still, there’s increasing demand for Marvel to push these themes and ideas more prominently, and the hints of a relationship between Captain Britain and Rachel Grey have been tremendously popular. Hopefully, the new costume design comes with a new X-Men relationship too.
