One of the X-Men’s most badass mutants shines in a new Psylocke cosplay from @hendoart showing the hero in action her classic costume. In the colorful cosplay, the cosplayer brings Psylocke’s Jim Lee-designed costume to life as she has a sword drawn at the ready. The cosplay embraces the ’90s design and showcases one of the most important heroes in the X-Men lineup during the extremely popular era.

Psylocke has remained a fan-favorite among X-Men readers despite her complicated history in the comics. The sister of Captain Britain, Betsy Braddock, joined the X-Men in X-Men #213, where the telepathic mutant served as an important member of the team. However, during Chris Claremont and Jim Lee’s run on the X-Men, Psylocke’s body was switched with a ninja known as Kwannon – as the hero remained inside her body for years. Braddock gave up her Psylocke persona after she was killed and brought back to life in her original body. Braddock would become Marvel’s new Captain Britain while Kwannon continued to fight as Psylocke. With her powers, Braddock was able to create a psionic knife and had other psionic-related abilities.

On her Instagram account, @Hendoart shared her take on the X-Men hero. The costume embraces Psylocke’s most iconic look as the cosplay features the hero’s colorful bodysuit with a red sash tied around her waist. The Psylocke costume wouldn’t be complete without the arm and leg bands and long purple gloves and leggings. With her purple hair making the ensemble even bolder, @Hendoart strikes a pose as she reaches for the sword behind her.

Psylocke has undergone several costume changes over the years. Her original look has long been criticized for being too risque and quite similar to that of Marvel’s Elektra’s original costume. Even actress Olivia Munn who portrayed Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse noted how uncomfortable and impractical it was to wear. However, despite its impracticality, the look remained a fan favorite as it was the hero’s costume during her most notable stories with the X-Men. So, while the outfit might be a bit dated now, it’s still a key part of Psylocke’s formative characterization.

All in all, whether you love or hate the original costume that inspired the cosplay, @Hedonart does a stellar job bringing the iconic Psylocke outfit to life. Her cosplay is comic-accurate and feels ripped right from the pages of her ’90s X-Men adventures.
