Upon reconfirming the company’s commitment to video games in an earnings call, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella divulged that Xbox Series X|S have become the fastest-selling Xbox consoles to date. This tracks with news Microsoft shared in November – with over one million units sold on day one, Xbox Series had the biggest console launch in brand history.

Xbox One previously held the crown as the brand’s biggest launch, similarly topping one million units sold in 24 hours. Such meteoric success didn’t last long-term, though, evidenced by the system never gaining traction like its seventh console generation predecessor. Xbox 360 went on to move approximately 85 million units worldwide, according to official counts. Meanwhile, estimates suggest Xbox One sales hover around the 50 million mark. (Microsoft hasn’t shared sales data of its own for Xbox One in many years.) If the Series X|S can maintain their current trajectory, the new hardware could eventually outsell the old in terms of lifetime sales.

As relayed by The Verge’s Senior Editor, Tom Warren, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently reiterated the tech giant’s dedication to gaming during an earnings call. Microsoft is “all in on games,” Nadella said before boasting of Xbox’s latest successes. According to the company CEO, Xbox Series X|S now counts as the fastest-selling Xbox consoles ever, “with more consoles sold life-to-date than any previous generation.” Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad added more texture to the conversation, noting that estimates place Series X|S at about 6.5 million units sold as of June 30. Estimates during the same time frame in Xbox One’s life cycle put that particular console at roughly 5.7 million in sales.

The good will that Xbox is currently coasting on indicates this early momentum in the Xbox Series X|S generation won’t soon slow to a stop. Xbox Game Pass continues to provide unbelievable value, for one. And Xbox Game Studios hold a lot of promise in terms of work-in-progress titles, especially with the likes of Psychonauts 2 and the eagerly-anticipated Halo Infinite on the horizon.

Microsoft’s gaming division has become increasingly bullish in recent years, doubling down on the interactive medium by acquiring several studios and expanding the breadth of Game Pass as a subscription service. Suffice it to say, this new console iteration will be interesting to watch from all fronts.
