Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has confirmed a Yakuza: Like a Dragon sequel is in development, and is set to continue Ichiban Kasuga’s story. The development studio, best known for the Yakuza and Judgment games, has also revealed an internal restructure ushering in a new era of Ryu Ga Gotoku games.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon was met with high praise from both fans and critics when it launched in 2020. Players take on the role of Kasuga, a low-ranking member of the yakuza, who returns to his Tokyo home following a prison stint for a crime he didn’t commit. Players get to explore a thriving and dynamic modern-day Japan as they try to unravel a story of mystery and betrayal. Outside of the main campaign, Sega fans can enjoy a range of playable in-game arcade cabinets, try out some go-karting, or take on unique jobs. The release introduces new mechanics to the series with turn-based RPG elements, which proved to be a success for Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

In a new website post, RGG Studio has shared details of a company restructure while thanking fans for their continued support. The post announces that developers Toshihiro Nagoshi and Daisuke Sato will be leaving the company, leading to the restructuring. Alongside news of the internal staff shuffle, Masayoshi Yokoyama, now RGG director and executive producer, also confirms that a Yakuza: Like a Dragon sequel is in development. Yokoyama states that the new game will continue Kasuga’s story following the events of Like a Dragon, saying:

“Ryu Ga Gotoku’s predecessors have passed down their beliefs and know-how to each and every staff member. You can witness it in the recently released Lost Judgment and will see it in the upcoming sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon which will continue Ichiban Kasuga’s story.”

Fans could be seeing the project soon, with Yokoyama adding: “Whether it’s six months or one year from now, I hope to show you a new Ryu Ga Gotoku title by a new Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio that is different but still the same.

The post comes just weeks after then-unconfirmed reports that Nagoshi, creator of the Yakuza and Judgment series, would be leaving Sega. The developer has been with the company for over 30 years and has helped to realize some of the most memorable and beloved stories and worlds in gaming. It’s believed that Nagoshi is joining Chinese company NetEase, though this has yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, series director and producer Daisuke Sato also hasn’t confirmed his next career move.

Unfortunately for Yakuza fans, none of the developers have offered any further detail on the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon sequel. With Like a Dragon only launching last year, it’s likely fans will have many years to wait before getting their hands on the next game in the series. The developer has assured fans that the franchise is in the safest of hands following the studio’s restructure, which hopefully means gamers will soon get to see more of what makes Yakuza: Like a Dragon so popular.
