Yellowjackets Episode 9 Trailer Shows The Beginnings Of Team’s Cannibalism

A new trailer for the upcoming Yellowjackets episode 9 teases the stranded soccer team’s descent into cannibalism. Created by married couple Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets received rave reviews upon its premiere in November. The horror mystery series unfolds in two alternating timelines. One follows a high school soccer team in 1996 as they struggle to survive following a devastating plane crash in the northern wilderness. Meanwhile, twenty-five years later, a few survivors deal with the resulting trauma, nosy bad actors, and unrevealed secrets. 

From the events that unfold in the series premiere, audiences learn early on that the teenagers ultimately devolve into a feral, cannibalistic clan, not unlike the characters in The Lord of The Flies. In episode 8, however, things are just beginning to escalate for the desperate Yellowjackets. Van (Liv Hewson) barely survives a brush with death at the hands of a ferocious wolf pack, and the visibly shaken entourage—with Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) at the helm—abandon their search for help to return to the cabin. When another Yellowjacket’s rescue mission ends in a fiery explosion (Laura Lee, played by Jane Widdop, piloting a rickety abandoned plane), all hope seems lost for the hungry, desperate survivors.         

A new Yellowjackets promo from Showtime teases the events of the season’s penultimate episode. From the looks of it, the woods-bound team is beginning to descend into chaos. The mood among the girls seems to oscillate between celebration and terror, with the trailer hinting at the team’s first time wearing animal skins—a harsh reminder that winter is coming. Trippy camera effects—not to mention an allusion to being poisoned—denote a fever dream-like atmosphere. “Something’s coming,” intones Lottie (Courtney Eaton), the de facto seer of the group. Later, her words portend something even more sinister: “We won’t be hungry much longer.” At least Van, her head now stitched and bandaged up, appears to be in better spirits. Things aren’t faring too well for the adult Yellowjackets, either. At the end of episode 8, Taissa (Tawny Cypress) is struggling once again with sleepwalking, Misty (Christina Ricci) is holding someone hostage in her basement, Natalie (Juliette Lewis) is blackmailing her former sponsor for access to Travis’ bank account information, and Shauna’s (Melanie Lynskey) paramour isn’t who he claims to be. Says Shauna in the trailer, “When did we become these people who lie and do awful things?”

Though the episode 9 trailer focuses on the younger Yellowjackets, it also dances around a question that’s been looming for much of Season 1: the true identity of Adam (Peter Gadiot). At the end of the last episode, Shauna finds glitter in her closet, suggesting that Adam is the blackmailer. Given the show’s many twists and turns, however, one can’t rule out that her husband Jeff (Warren Kole) is a suspect as well. One popular fan theory is that Adam is actually Travis’ brother Javi, the lone tween to survive the 1996 plane crash. “I found him, Tai,” Shauna says cryptically in the trailer. “I have him.” Perhaps Adam—whoever he is—has been out of the Yellowjackets’ grasp for the past twenty-five years. As Yellowjackets careens towards the season finale, the penultimate episode could raise as many questions as it answers. It airs this Sunday at 10:00 EST on Showtime
