The updated Yokai Inn website confirms more details about the upcoming indie game. The Ghibli-like slice-of-life video game is inspired by both Harvest Moon and the widely popular Stardew Valley farming simulation game. Yokai Inn will have players run an abandoned inn frequented by spirits called yokai. Gameplay will consist of activities like maintaining the inn’s furnace and sweeping its floors in addition to life-sim activities like farming and crafting, characteristic of these types of indie simulation games. Yokai Inn also promises engaging interactions with the yokai patrons, townsfolk, and other NPCs.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Fans confused Yokai Inn with Frontier Story, another indie game project, due to their similar detailed pixel art styles. Though Yokai Inn developer ShibaPixels admitted that the art style of their game was influenced by Frontier Story, fans’ confusion has caused some friction between both developers. This ultimately led to ShibaPixels apologizing and changing the graphics of their game. This past week, the complete graphics overhaul of Yokai Inn was showcased in a new trailer. Along with the graphics refresh, the video also displays new gameplay.

The new art changes are reflected in the updated website for Yokai Inn, which also confirms more details about the game. ShibaPixels gives more background on the game development: sound and music for the indie game are being created by the musical artist Moonsailor, and the game is being drawn on Aseprite and built on the Unity game engine. Players will manage and expand their inn with the goal of drawing in all kinds of yokai guests. ShibaPixels also lists the types of yokai that are currently present in Yokai Inn, such as Kitsune, Onis, and Kappas.

As seen in the new trailer, the website confirms gameplay of foraging for resources, crafting tools, building relationships with NPCs including other innkeepers, and celebrating Japanese holidays. There are also new movement methods available, like swimming, climbing, and using animals as mounts. In fact, players will be given the option to find animals in the wilderness and adopt them, which is unique in this genre. Of course, as almost expected in these types of games, Yokai Inn will allow players to customize their outfits, hairstyles, and room.

These new updates only renew interest and excitement for the indie game. As the game is still in its early development, Yokai Inn‘s release date has yet to be announced. However, with the recent unveiling of the new art style and new features, fans are eagerly waiting to hear more.
