During the Nintendo Direct, the company announced that Yoko Taro and Square Enix have created a new RPG card game called Voice of Cards which launches next month. This marks Yoko Taro’s first major release as creative director since the various versions of NieR and NieR Automata were released over the past few years, along with the mobile game NieR Reincarnation.

Yoko Taro is known for his work on the Drakengard series, and on the multiple NieR spin-offs, which have received critical acclaim. As involved as he’s been in the NieR games so far, it was unknown when he would next create a brand-new game. After writing for Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, he’s back with a brand-new title. It also marks Yoko Taro’s next collaboration with Yosuke Saito, his creative partner on NieR and NieR Automata. The two confirmed some months back that they were working on two games together, including one that was stated to be digital-only and “indie-like”. Neither has commented at this time if this is, in fact, that game.

As part of Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced Voice of Cards, a new RPG from Yoko Taro and Square Enix that uses a card system. Everything in the game is depicted on cards, from environments to characters resulting in a video game that calls back to tabletop RPGs or board games. Combat is turn-based, relying on a combination of player skill and RNG. The story concerns a trio of protagonists who are commanded by a queen to slay a dragon. The music for the game is composed by Keiichi Okabe, who previously worked on both the NieR and the Drakengard games. Voice of Cards unites the NieR creative team with Square Enix. Yoko Taro is no stranger to collaboration, having previously expressed his desire for NieR skins in Fall Guys (which did happen).

Little is known at present about the game’s story beyond its initial premise presented in the trailer that aired during Nintendo Direct. Yoko Taro is known for writing dark, philosophical stories, so it’s a safe bet that that will be the sort of narrative players can expect in Voice of Cards. The game’s unique visuals, with literally everything presented on cards, are sure to make for some interesting experiences as players progress through the game. Square Enix, meanwhile, keeps going strong with its long legacy of RPGs, putting out brand-new titles like Voice of Cards alongside entries in long-running series like Mana.

Yoko Taro has created some of the most unique games to date, and it will be interesting to see how the masked mystery man brings his signature style and flair to this new game. Will this game reference his previous work, or will it stand on its own? Only time will tell.
