Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Young Justice season 4, episode 12, “Og Htrof Dna Reuqnoc!”

A recent episode of Young Justice hinted that its version of the Justice League may soon be expanding into a group comparable to Justice League Unlimited, with an official reserves program overseen by Superman. The heroes of Earth-16 are far more organized than in the prime DC Comics universe, with three separate Justice League teams operating, including the covert Team and the Outsiders. However, recent events suggested that might not be enough to keep the world safe from all the cosmic menaces threatening it.

Recent episodes of Young Justice have seen Earth-16 imperiled by a battle between two Lords of Chaos, Child and Klarion the Witch Boy. The stakes grew higher still when Klarion was defeated and Child set about trying to literally rip the world in half. This left a group of magicians, led by Zatanna and Dr. Fate, trying to hunt down Child and stop her, as the rest of Earth’s heroes and magicians attempted to mitigate the damage caused by Child’s actions. Surprisingly, several villains, such as the Wizard, joined in the battle to save the Earth, though many, like Vandal Savage, enacted a Project Lifeboat plan to escape off-world.

This led to a scene that ran under the credits of Young Justice season 4, episode 12, “Og Htrof Dna Reuqnoc!” where Black Lightning, Superman, Tempest, and Nightwing assessed the damage Child had inflicted on the Indian city of Agra. Describing the battle with Child as “a crisis situation,” Superman told Black Lightning that they couldn’t depend on villains like the Wizard stepping up to help them every time all of humanity was threatened. Superman suggested they organize “a true Justice League reserves system,” noting sadly that they would likely need it in the immediate future. This brings to mind the expanded roster of heroes assembled for Justice League Unlimited, which grew out of the 2001 Justice League series.

Precisely what form this Justice League reserves might take is unclear, but it seems likely it might include a group similar to Justice League Dark. While the Justice League of Earth-16 includes an impressive variety of heroes, the one area in which they are severely underserved is magic powers. Apart from Dr. Fate, Zatanna, and two of her three apprentices, Traci Thirteen and Khalid Nassour, there are no pure magicians in the Justice League.

It’s also possible this Justice League reserves group might introduce some of the heroes from Justice League Unlimited, who have yet to be introduced into the reality of Young Justice. One likely possibility on that front is the time-traveling Booster Gold, whose absence among the other heroes from the Justice League International era in earlier seasons of Young Justice was notable. With the Legion of Superheroes having traveled in time to avert some coming catastrophe, the stage could also be set for the Greatest Hero You’ve Never Heard Of to make his Young Justice debut.
