A new Young Sheldon season 5, episode 9 teaser reveals Sheldon (Iain Armitage) oddly struggling to complete his exam. The Big Bang Theory spin-off debuted in 2017 focusing on the socially-inept genius’ childhood years in Texas. This allows CBS to continue building on Sheldon’s story despite its hit parent show wrapping up in 2019.

Sheldon has always been proud of his intellect and he never misses a chance to show it off, even to his friends. In The Big Bang Theory, he frequently lorded his accomplishments over everyone, particularly Howard (Simon Helberg) because he didn’t like engineers. This was despite the fact that most of his peers and own group were considered standouts in their respective scientific fields. Sheldon occasionally did struggle with his work in Caltech. At one point, he almost gave up on his bid for the Nobel Prize in Physics after encountering a massive hurdle on his and Amy’s (Mayim Bialik) work on Super Asymmetry. He eventually g0t out of his rut, thanks to some indirect encouragement from his late father, George (Lance Barber). But now in Young Sheldon, the kid genius is encountering some academic problems which prove very frustrating.

TV Promos shared a brand new teaser for Young Sheldon season 5, episode 9, “The Yips and an Oddly Hypnotic Bohemian.” It shows Sheldon blanking while trying to answer his exam. He blames his inability to complete the test on Missy (Raegan Revord), who is also in a slump playing baseball. Watch the full promo video below:

Missy calls her slump having the “yips,” which isn’t scientific-based. Given that, it’s interesting to Sheldon subscribing to the idea after he failed to answer his exam. The question now is how the Cooper twins will get out of their respective ruts. Missy is shown working on it by practicing more, but what Sheldon does to get out of this state is yet to be seen. He can study harder, but it seems like the problem kicks in when he’s on the spot taking the exam, and is almost like stage fright. Given the kid genius’ recent academic woes, including struggling in his first engineering class, it seems like Sheldon isn’t getting a break anytime soon.

Elsewhere in the episode, Young Sheldon will finally be revisiting George and Brenda’s budding relationship. After the first two outings of the year, there’s barely any focus on them anymore. The episode’s official synopsis reveals that the Cooper patriarch will start work on his neighbor’s house, which means that they can spend more time together. However, the pair have to be careful with Meemaw (Annie Potts), since Mary (Zoe Perry) is already suspicious that they are doing something inappropriate…
