A brand new promotional post by Young Sheldon teases a match-up between Sheldon’s (Iain Armitage) two mentors — Dr. Linkletter (Ed Begley Jr.) and Dr. Sturgis (Wallace Shawn). The Big Bang Theory spin-off returns this week after taking a short hiatus to pave the way for the Winter Olympics. And, it seems like the socially inept genius will see himself in the middle of a conflict between his intellectual advisers.

Fans of Young Sheldon had to go two weeks without any fresh episodes of the CBS comedy not long after it returned on the air following its winter break. At that point, the series was starting to shift its focus back on its titular character after tackling his extended family’s respective issues. With Sheldon’s first year as a college student at East Texas Tech nearing its end, things should be settling down for the character. But, that doesn’t seem like the case. In fact, the upcoming outing of the prequel show might see another commotion, this time between Linkletter and Sturgis.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The series’ official Twitter account shared a few promotional images for the new Young Sheldon season 5 episode titled “A Free Scratcher and Feminine Wiles.” They seem like stills from the episode and they feature a run-down of Sturgis and Linkletter’s capabilities as if they’re set to compete in a boxing match. Ming-Na Wen, who recently starred in The Book of Boba Fett as Fennec Shand, is also set to debut as Dr. Carol Lee in the upcoming Young Sheldon episode. According to the official synopsis, she’ll be East Texas Tech’s director of experimental cosmology and, expectedly, Sheldon will butt heads with her. The trailer supports this as the young genius is shown arguing with her. But it doesn’t explain why Sturgis and Linkletter come to blows. It’s been previously established that the pair has an intense rivalry, but with Sturgis no longer working at the school, it’s curious what their conflict will be about.

Chances are that the boxing setting for Linkletter and Sturgis’ match is all for comedic purposes. Perhaps it’s from a vision as old Sheldon (Jim Parsons) narrates the events of their fight. However, for fans of The Big Bang Theory, this could be reminiscent of Sheldon’s own argument with his Caltech arch-nemesis, Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). At one point in the original series, they competed in a series of physical activities to decide who was going to get a newly-vacated office at work.

Young Sheldon season 5 returns with a brand new episode this Thursday on CBS.
