Younger is a long-running TV Land dramedy starring Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff. Foster plays Liza Miller, a forty-year-old woman who lies about her age to get a job. Duff plays Kelsey Peters, an up-and-coming editor at Empirical Press, where Liza gets a job.

At the office, Kelsey and Liza are the same age (supposedly!) at the start of the show: twenty-six. Their worlds converge at work and after hours, including their friend groups. Liza’s best friend is Maggie Amato; Kelsey’s is Lauren Heller. Maggie and Lauren drive much of the show’s comedy. Each woman is a people person who thrives on human interaction. It’s impossible to pick a favorite, so here are equal reasons why Lauren and Maggie are the coolest best friends.

10 Lauren: Carefree & Open To Anything

Lauren Heller can be a bit neurotic, but she is somehow a free spirit at the same time. She is 100% dedicated to her job in PR during the day and is always ready for a party after work. Lauren is a huge proponent of letting people be themselves.

In everything from human sexuality to career goals, Lauren is open to anything. With the exception of planning Kelsey’s wedding, Lauren goes with the flow and encourages everyone to have fun in their own way.

9 Maggie: Accepting & Willing To Learn

Throughout Younger, Maggie has a few ups and downs in her work and in her love life. No matter what happens, she has a good head on her shoulders and takes it all in stride. Maggie takes her time getting used to people, but she accepts them and is willing to learn what makes them tick. She and Lauren are actually an item over the course of several episodes.

8 Lauren: Understands The Young New Yorker Struggle

Lauren is a millennial like Kelsey is (and like everyone thinks Liza is). With that comes a certain sense of struggle, a daily grind to earn one’s place in the workforce. Lauren doesn’t take no for an answer; she is tenacious, daring, and innovative. These are traits that help her successfully transition to running her own PR business. Lauren is a good role model for her BFF, who rises to the top of the corporate ladder overnight.

7 Maggie: Gives Liza A Place To Live

Liza is forever indebted to Maggie for her generosity. In season one, Liza reinvents herself and realizes that New York is her new home. She would have had a hard time making it work without the love and support from Maggie. Maggie has a swanky place in Brooklyn that everyone wants to hang out in, and Liza gets to call it home on her journey to being younger.

6 Lauren: Gives Kelsey A Place To Live

In the first half of Younger’s seasons, Kelsey lives with Lauren and her family. Lauren and Kelsey enjoy the security of the Heller abode, which leaves them free to enjoy home-cooked meals or to go experience NYC nightlife.

Kelsey doesn’t leave until Lauren’s temporary boyfriend moves in and becomes a pest, but it was cool of Lauren to encourage her best friend to stay.

5 Maggie: Voice Of Wisdom

Even when she is figuring out a problem of her own, Maggie never hesitates to help her friends with their issues. She is willing to listen to them, and if the time is right, she offers them valuable advice that goes a long way. Maggie is in on Liza’s secret from the beginning (she inspired it, after all), so she is in a unique position to counsel her friend through the complexities of a lie. Maggie is especially kind to Liza’s daughter, Caitlin. When Caitlin doesn’t understand what her mom’s job is, Maggie assures the college student that all of Liza’s hard work is for Caitlin.

4 Lauren: PR Genius

Lauren’s job in PR becomes a way for her to help Kelsey out of many sticky situations. Kelsey doesn’t pay Lauren for it, but Lauren saves Empirical’s image several times. Anything tacky or inappropriate on the web or on social media is gone within the hour if Lauren is involved.

3 Maggie: Sophisticated Artist

Much of Maggie’s passion in life seems to come from her career as an artist. She creates the most stunning murals, paintings, and sculptures. Living among an artist promotes Liza’s creativity, and she even starts shaking up her wardrobe with different styles and patterns in her outfits.

2 Lauren: Helps Kelsey Branch Out

Lauren never tires of helping other people branch out. For example, she pushes Kelsey to move on from Thad (a guy no one wanted Kelsey to marry). On a broader scale, she is a force that brings everyone together. Multiple friend groups and personalities are able to share a meal or dance at a party together because of the commonalities Lauren reminds them they all have.

1 Maggie: Friends With Liza, Friends With Josh

When Liza and Josh break up, Maggie doesn’t let either of them down. Josh sees her as a real mentor, and Maggie cares about him deeply. She is able to support Liza while still being there for Josh. Without Maggie, Josh and Liza might not have found their way back to hanging out so quickly.
