When love stories are shown on TV, they’re often overdramatic (like on Grey’s Anatomy or Riverdale) or part of a cheesy sitcom. You’re The Worst did something completely different: the series, which aired for five seasons from 2014 until 2019, depicted a realistic relationship between two characters who aren’t anything close to perfect.

This popular show has a new take on love and dating that is really unique, so it makes sense that there are many intelligent quotes. Here are 10 quotes about relationships from You’re The Worst that we can all relate to.

10 “Marriage is hard, but your wedding is the one day it’s fun. Everything is downhill after the wedding.”

Lindsay Jillian (Kether Donohue) is in a miserable relationship, and her character shows that sometimes people marry for any reason but true love. Her husband is Paul Jillian (Allan McLeod).

While Lindsay’s quote is incredibly cynical, there is definitely some truth to it. Hopefully if we get married, we don’t think that every single day will be that bad, but many people talk about how being married means putting the work in on a daily basis. Sure, the wedding is a party… but marriage, just like a long-term and serious relationship, isn’t always 100 percent fun all the time.

9 “Why is it so hard to find someone to get close with?”

This is another great, relatable quote from Lindsay, and it’s the kind of thing that might make us feel kind of sad and lonely if we think about it too much.

These two simple words are incredibly meaningful within the context of this show. When Gretchen says this quote, it’s part of her storyline when she’s suffering from depression, and she’s so happy that Jimmy sticks around at her place.

This is so relatable. All anyone wants is that special person who sees us, understands us, and most of all, wants to be in it for the long haul.

Paul’s quote is both beautiful and interesting. It makes us want to sit down in a quiet place and think for a while about why some relationships work and why some don’t.

The characters on You’re The Worst aren’t known for being super romantic, so this quote from Jimmy is probably the most romantic that he gets. And it’s perfect.

Who hasn’t thought this about their partner? Sometimes it feels like no one really understands us except for them, and they’re the only person that we want to spend time with. (Well, except when they’re driving us crazy and not loading the dishwasher the “right” way but that’s another story.)
