You’re The Worst: Main Characters Ranked By Likability

You’re The Worst is one of FX’s underrated comedies. The series showcases an array of funny characters, and their colorful personalities are driven by personal wants. For some characters, funny nature overshadows nasty actions. Fans aren’t surprised to see bad behavior in the show.

Bad behavior is one of the things that makes You’re The Worst one of the best dramas to binge on Hulu. The namesake of the show lets viewers know they will see some unlikable characters when they watch. However, some key players like Jimmy Shive-Overly charm viewers with their selfish pursuits, while others like Becca Barbara are hard to grow fond of.

Lindsay Jillian

Lindsay is fun to watch and makes for plenty of laughs in You’re The Worst. However, she is perhaps the least likable character on the show. Most of her poor qualities come out in the relationship with her on-and-off husband Paul. Lindsay’s personality contrasts Paul’s patience and generosity.

He is willing to take adapt his life to Lindsay’s, even reluctantly allowing other partners into their relationship for her sake. However, Lindsay continues to treat Paul as an annoyance. She uses him so he can fund her life, and she only realizes how much he helps her when he is gone and the power is shut off in her home. Lindsay uses Edgar to meet other men, ignoring his feelings for her. Lindsay’s air-headed selfishness makes it hard to find her endearing.

Gretchen Cutler

Gretchen is one of the two protagonists of You’re The Worst along with her on-and-off boyfriend Jimmy Shive-Overly. Audiences are meant to relate to Gretchen and often do, but she proves to be hard to like throughout the series. Gretchen lies to nearly everyone in her life, from romantic partners like Jimmy to close friends like Lindsay.

Gretchen shirks her responsibilities, often leading to headaches for the clients she manages. She doesn’t have respect for the people around her. However, what’s least likable about Gretchen is her self-pity. She makes fun of others for their misgivings, yet spouts multiple monologues about how tough her life is. By the end of the series, it is hard to take her sob stories seriously.

Becca Barbara

Jimmy’s ex Becca appears throughout You’re The Worst because she is Lindsay’s sister. Like all of the main characters, she could easily be considered “the worst” in her own ways. Becca treats her husband Vernon Barbara like a nuisance and tries to step in his way any time he wants to have a little fun. Most notably, she bans his favorite drink, “trash juice” from their gatherings.

Audiences don’t see Becca act as ugly as some of the other main characters like Gretchen. However, fans can’t help but notice her selfishness like when she tricks Paul into paying her for surrogacy. She has no intention of helping Paul have a child and lies to get payment out of him. Her overbearing behavior toward some of the show’s most likable characters like Vernon and Paul makes her considerably less affable.

Edgar Quintero

Edgar is one of the more amiable residents of Jimmy’s “meticulously curated” home. He doesn’t pay rent, but falls in the role of Jimmy’s right-hand man, cooking unique brunches for him and Gretchen most mornings. Jimmy takes advantage of Edgar’s generosity until Edgar makes enough money to move out.

Edgar is cheery against Jimmy and Gretchen’s nihilism, and his personality is refreshing for fans. However, he gets an inflated ego after gaining a bit of success in the comedy world. Furthermore, he tells Jimmy not to marry Gretchen at the series’ end. For fans rooting for their eternal union, Edgar couldn’t be forgiven.

Paul Jillian

Paul is perhaps the most positive main character in You’re The Worst, and his pleasantness makes him a fan favorite. While Jimmy and Gretchen can’t help but do wrong, Paul acts as a moral compass, consistently outraged by their behavior and its influence on Lindsay. He often enlightens the other characters with some of You’re The Worst‘s best quotes.

Paul may be hard to like for those who mistake his kindness for weakness. However, other than his brief jaunt with a men’s rights group following his divorce, he has few villainous moments. He returns to the show cackling an evil laugh and is rude to waitresses. However, this is an isolated incident, and Paul is usually a delight to watch.

Jimmy Shive-Overly

If there is one protagonist of You’re The Worst, it is either Gretchen or Jimmy. Jimmy is one of the funniest characters on the show. He puts on a stubborn air of seriousness, but can’t suppress the booming voice of his inner child. When Jimmy isn’t playing the role of the sullen writer, he builds tree houses and writes heckles for events that don’t have an avenue for such roasts.

Jimmy shares many of the selfish qualities Gretchen has, and the two do several terrible things to each other in You’re The Worst. However, he is far more charming than her. Audiences can forget Jimmy’s jilting Gretchen after the proposal, and his harsh treatment of Edgar. His jokes and antics overshadow his unsavory moments. Furthermore, unlike most characters, he takes responsibility for his actions. He confesses to Gretchen when he cheats on her, spouts a tearful apology to her when she links up with Boone and reconciles with Edgar at the end of the series.

Vernon Barbara

Becca’s husband Vernon is perhaps the most likable character in You’re The Worst. He is also the goofiest main character. Many of his antics have made You’re The Worst one of FX’s best comedies. Vernon comes up with schemes for fun while the people in his life are tormented by problems of their own making. However, Vernon has his problems as well.

Vernon faces financial trouble, an unhappy marriage, and a medical lawsuit by the end of the series. Watching him handle his problems is hilarious. He may hurt people in the process of dealing with them, like taking money from Paul. However, his childlike attitude and strive for “good times” make him hard to dislike. He always makes things right after he does wrong. Unlike Jimmy, many fans want to be Vernon’s best friend.
